At work, Essendon Airport this afternoon, wearing P plates:

A nice white W116 280SE with an old GMH Dealers sticker on the rear window from Hamilton in country Victoria. Think it was a'78 and despite no Becker, it had a period-correct, radio cassette player !

This morning on Kwinana freeway, Northbound near Beeliar drive.
I saw a W201 in decent condition, but with the most horrible rims I have ever seen.

I think the owner stole some lids from the local soup kitchen...

Spotted in Maldon today, immaculate 1981 W123 280E with a 4 speed manual!
Parked opposite, had a good look at it, then was dragged to the market by my wife but went back to get something from the car and he was just leaving so he pulled over for a chat. He had been admiring my car while I was in the market (it looks good from 2 metres away after the cut and polish). I was going to offer to buy his but I didn't have the nerve.

OMG it's a debadged W201 too. What ever could it be? Perhaps it has a M119 implant, but I think not. Maybe they should have been a C- (minus class).

Start with an E and finish with a S, anything else is not in the running.

Up in the northern burbs there is a red W114CE with those moon disks and a matt black W123 with pin stripping and side fender scallops, also rolling with the moon disk look.
Keep a look out for the nice looking blue W124 coupe with the heavy rusted bonnet. Americian rat rod culture.......... Dunno?

Maybe one of the early signs of a civilization in demise because of the end of the mining boom....

In more civilized parts of the world (take Germany) those disks would be highly illegal, because they seriously decrease the flow of cooling air around the brakes...

BTW Giles,

I think I spotted Nelson around Jandakot, is that possible? I know you sold it...

I reckon I spotted Toby driving Calvin on Sunday in Mclaren Vale. It was a glorious sunny day, we were heading home after lunching at Beach Road Winery in Mclaren Vale ( I can throughly recommend it, they do great pizzas ).
The blue coupe looked very graceful driving along.

Not sure if this is the correct place to put this posting, but anyway...

Spotted this add on gumtree, surly the bargain of the month, if not the year!. A useable W124 300TE for under $1000....incredible. Looks to be in great condition. My wife won't let me buy it either :banghead:

Interesting 1989 W126 420SEL for sale on Gumtree:

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/marion/c ... 1094896653

The owner wants $35000 Negotiable. Yes, that's right 35 grand!
Only 115000km, motor enhanced by Sonder Schutz, however the ad says it's not concourse. Difficult to sell a car at this price with only one photo on the ad.

Any one know who Sonder Schutz is?

Sonderschutz is an armoured vehicle manufacturer. Given the price, the armour would want to be to current standards, otherwise it's worthless. so much extra mass zero performance and terrible handling.

Coming towards me in South Melbourne this afternoon, a silver SLC.

First thought: who's stolen my car?
Second thought: Gee, they do look great. Very classy. Love the way, being so long, 'it just keeps on coming'.

Through the round-about it seemed remarkably flat and composed. Nice engine/exhaust note too.

Will have to take mine out this weekend!

Re: Spotted - 'gold-plated' Merc

Post by 3DB » Wed 27 Jul, 2016 10:44 am

I spotted this in Bangkok traffic yesterday. Looked like it had been hot-dipped in gold. Not sure what series it is but think the badge said E250. Pretty over-the-top.

A very familiar sight, given that there's been one in the garage for the past 31 years...

Spotted in a queue IN the bank yesterday:

Went for a nice drive in the 230E today and while passing through a small town south of here, I spotted this beauty. Had to slow down and take a couple of pics.

Hi Toby,

Was that around Normanville? I was staying down that way and passed one like that while driving. If it is the same one it is a beautiful looking car.

Yes, Yankalilla actually. I spoke to the owner for a bit. It's been fully restored and is one of the nicest I've ever seen. He bought it that way from someone in NSW. He is very proud of it, as well he should be!

Here is a very sad Mercedes truck.
No windscreen, grille from another model Mercedes wired in place, sitting outside all of the time supporting a sign.
Would anyone care to try to rescue this old girl?

Located a Avocados, facing Brookton Hwy Kelmscott WA

Fancy doing a joint project Tony?

Is your block big enough to park this old girl?

Can anyone tell me what the significance of 'Traffic' is in these photos?

The 420 SEL is parked a few blocks from my place and I've seen it a few times. It is piled full of all kinds of junk and seems to leak like a sieve as there is always condensation on the inside of the windows. There is a note on the windscreen explaining that it is not an abandoned vehicle and please don't tow it away.

The other one is an old Mercedes truck that I saw today and made the connection. This one was quite a way from my place, near Parramatta.

The source of condensation could well be above the rear left hand indicator lens

Some people mistakenly think if you write TRAFFIC on the car or instead of number plate it is OK to drive it around unregistered e.g. from home to workshop. Not so.

Well that explains it. Just a coincidence and not an obscure culturural reference.

On the way to the Winton historic racing today I was passed by a yellow W123 300D TDT. Yes, a stationwagon turbo diesel. These are very rare here aren't they? I was just past Kalkallo.

Well, that's embarrassing. OM617's aren't notorious for being able to set land-speed records (except perhaps for worlds slowest vehicle) even in turbo guise.
