Spotted

Post by Boyracer » Fri 07 Sep, 2007 12:14 pm

I thought I might start a thread dedicated to Merc sightings.

The other night headed home from the city, I saw a very straight red 190 with the plates FIN-190.

Another night in the last couple of months, I spotted an immaculate 110 series with the plates WDB-110.

They'd have to be enthusiasts with those plates.
Cheers,
Michael

On my way to MercBits yesterday I saw the most amazing 107 I've ever seen.

Scarlet red... looked like it had a wide body kit on it or somethign.

Going back there tomorrow so I'll take some pics if it's there on a Saturday.

Edit: do the Streched W140 limo's I'm seeing frequently on the news due to Apec count?

I reckon they all count for something, but speaking for myself I'm much more interested when I see older cars on the road. 8)

Well it's 9am and I've arrived at work. I saw three SL/SLC's this morning.

Two at Waterloo near the city and one down at Taren Point (SLC-xx-x). All looking very neat and respectable!

This is a good topic to have but am concerned about giving out rego numbers of cars spotted without the owners permission.

I've amended my earlier post in deference to your concern.

Further to my earlier post, I saw another two SL/SLC's whilst I was out at lunch today. I should mention that these were all the series that date back to the mid seventies. I don't see any for months but so far today I've seen five! What's going on? Some kind of convention?

Whilst I don't give out other people's address, phone, e-mail details, etc. without the okay of the owner/s (these data may not necessarily be publicly listed - e.g. "silent" phone numbers), I don't have a problem with quoting rego plates as these are mandatorily public items, there for all to see.

Do others see a problem here? I don't know 76Benz's reasoning on the matter; perhaps he could illuminate me?

I reckon that if they've paid the money to have personailsed plates, they'd be thrilled to know there's a bunch of train spotters listing them on the net.

Popper in to Sleeping Beauties today, which is a top notch restoration place in Brisbane that has even done cars for the MB museum in Germany.
Saw a convertible 300SL, coupe 300SL, convertible ponton, a couple of 190SL's, W112 300SEL and a wild W194 (?) prototype of the gullwings that is being hand built for a collector in the states. Amazing work. Wonder if they want an apprentice...

Oh, and if anyone ever see's a gull wing in real life that has also been following the progress of my FrankenBenz - their door handles are almost exactly what I had visulaised, though just in a different location! Maybe Karl Benz invaded my body that night when I was trying to figure them out...

Wish I had my camera on me - maybe another time!
Cheers,
Drew

No I think Karl has been long dead before the Gullwing came onto the drawing board. Do a google about the history of the Gullwing to find out who designed it.

I passed a really nice white 600 in Exhibition Street, Melbourne this morning.

There must've been a classic car thing going on as there were quite a few nice things moving about the town.

Black 600

I saw a black Mercedes 600 M100 last Thursday. It was left hand drive, with Berlin number plates. It was parked outside the Ultra-modern Mayor's building near Tower bridge, London.

007 On Her Majestys Secret Service

Post by markb » Wed 10 Oct, 2007 10:34 pm

We have the holly month of Ramadan here at the moment and as a result of people being up all night eating, as they fast all day, they are running every Bond movie made.

Thus being a big fan, I happened to watch On Her Majesty Secret Service from 1:30am last night, which has to be the best Bond for Benz spotting.

It starts with the 114 stretch limo, the Universal (Finnie) Ambulance, a 114 sedan with sunroof, a Merc SWB bus, like the one on John Green's call sign, the Finnie sedan chase thru' the snow and onto the Race track(where the Finnie rolls over and explodes) and finally the last scene , where the newly married JB's wife gets shot by villain Blowfeld and Fr. Bunt from a lovely Silver SWB 600 M100.

( I still look out for the factory steel sunroof on the V W Beetle in the snow, as I owned a rare '66 Bug with a Golde factory steel sunroof in Melbourne )

I can't wait until the holly month ends, as it is very tiring watches movies in the middle of the night!

Is it a club day in Sydney today or what?

At lunch today, I saw two W123 280CE's following each other up McEvoy Street in Waterloo. I would've thought that'd be rare enough in the sightings department.

But later on this evening just as I was heading back into the Shire, I saw a white W108 saloon separated by just one traffic light change from a W112 S Class coupe (cream/burgundy roof). They were both heading in the same direction. I wonder if they caught up with each other.
Cheers,
Michael

I spotted this in the next Emirate from Dubai, Sharjah.

The car still had it's stock MB wheels, but hugh truck tyres and flared guards.

You sure see some funny things over here!

More interesting sightings.

Today I saw quite a nice looking navy finnie along Crown Street in Surry Hills.

I also saw a beautiful burgundy coloured W108. This car is an absolute stunner and it does seem to be in use on a daily basis. I see it quite regularly.

Dweezil, that part of town certainly seems to attract a good share of classic Merc's.

I saw a very nice white W108 around there at lunchtime today. It had premium plates. I think they started with AVG.

An immaculate petrol roundie on the back streets of Ho Chi Minh city, being used as stand for a large sign advertising the latest Vietnamese action movie. It was so incongruous in a world of Honda clone 125s and Japanese economy cars. I took a photo but the camera was stolen!

Did ya see the finnie in the basement of the presidential palace? There are quite a few Mercs in Saigon but mostly newer ones and a lot of vans. A lot of the buses are Merc powered as well.
Yes there is a bit of petty crime in the tourist parts of Vietnam but that is a side effect of poverty I spose.

True - the upside is that physical violence against Westerners is almost unknown, comforting when you have family members working there.

Last week at Waverly Park shopping centre in Springvale, I met an elderly German gent with an immaculate silver 79 450SEL 6.9 which he tells me, is for sale at $25,000. The interior was blue with super thick white lambswool covers all round and in "as new" condition. No cracks in the dash, all the timber in a perfect, rich colour condition and exterior paint that looks almost too good and original on such an old classic beast.

What really attracted my attention, was the colour coded silver 16x8 Penta rims, slightly lowered suspension and timber 70's era sports steering wheel. He bought it from a wealthy woman who was the original owner 15 years ago.

IMO it has the look of an early AMG modded W116 SEL, I'm just sorry I didn't have my camera. :(

In Newcastle there has been a sudden increase in the amount of modified Mercs hitting the streets including a few nice w126 with large chrome wheels and airbag suspenison work worth thousands of dollars!!! Just the other day i saw an immaculate w126 AMG optioned 560sel with geniune 17inch AMG wheels, factory bodykit and beautiful white duco with tinted black taillights and dark windows!!! Drool. I love that car.
I saw another awesome w126 the other day, but then realised it was my car in the reflection of a window as a drove past!!! :P

CLK 6.3. Overtook me at 120 k,s. I felt like I was standing still. Could just hear a nice little exhaust growl as it went by o so efficiently (Melbourne Cup pun intended). Looked something like this as it went by.

I went to the Cooma Motorfest today and saw a real nice original 220Sb, what was interesting was that it was an Australian production one...... There was also a nice orignal condition W115 230.4 there...

The other night headed home from the city, I saw a very straight red 190 with the plates FIN-190.

Another night in the last couple of months, I spotted an immaculate 110 series with the plates WDB-110.

They'd have to be enthusiasts with those plates.

Spotted this again yesterday, on the southbound ED heading into the tunnel past william st exit.

Maroon colour, paint is okay, but the car does look straight. It appears to be a daily driver.

I thought someone from the forum would probably know who owns this... alas it appears not.

Exotic cars are pretty common here in Dubai, but this one on the back of the Dubai MB dealer's (Gargash) truck caught my attention in traffic:

I saw a flawless looking W123 230E in signal red along Anzac Parade at Kensington this evening. It had chromed wheel arches and white walls.

Very nice to see.

I also spotted a W123 280CE with mags along the Grand Parade at Monterey later on.

What a hectic day!
Cheers,
Michael

At Rose Bay today I saw a really nice champagne coloured W107 SL convertible. It was parked outside my second favourite cake shop. 8)

By the way, has anyone else noticed the green emoticon is called "Mr Green"? Is this a caricature, or what?

a W126 SEC of a differnt kind.

Post by markb » Sun 25 Nov, 2007 12:08 am

well, after showing you the W126 on steroids above, I saw yet another again on Wednesday in Dubai, this time a SEC coupe, with the original MB Alloy wheels with huge, tall tyres, that gave the car a very high stance. Everything else on the car looked stock and it was in excellent condition in Metallic Green.

I figure these guys must like the V8 torque of the 126's and go sand dune traversing, rather than sand dune bashing.....???

I saw a VERY nice black 600 up in Crows Nest on Saturday night.

I got the impression it was a short wheel base. It didn't look like a limo.

I saw a very nice example of a mid seventies 450SE in Baptist Street, Surry Hills this afternoon. It was signal red and looked very sweet indeed. It made me realise just how rare it is to see a really nice example of this series these days.

The only thing that wasn't quite to my taste was the gold star on the bonnet, the bootlid and the gold model number.
Cheers,
Michael

In the gym car park a white w108 'ute' with Americana headlights and what looked like later model "T" series rear lamps, column shift, black tonneau and 600ES on the tailgate. Looked like a very carefully done conversion, but I am not sure what the 600 stands for. On the w108 chassis the cargo space is enormous. An eye catcher to say the least.
