Anybody have a OM642 engined vehicle?
Noisy? Reliable? Fuel efficient?
Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole?

I think the only serious (slightly expensive) issue I have seen with these is stretched timing chains. I personally though would happily get one everything else seems to be very minor/annoying issues. Here is a easy way to check if the chain is stretched if your looking at buying one, also these engines pull like a freight train:
