Rubberised Carpet Mat Back Breaking Down

Post by gjlockyer » Sat 23 Sep, 2017 8:49 pm

Going through all the hoops to get my "new" 26 year old W124 up to scratch. Today, a good carpet vacuum and spot clean as needed. The original Mercedes mats are still in excellent condition and after a lengthy bath in wool wash they were a lot cleaner - I could have grown a crop of spuds in the soil left in the sink!
The problem? The rubberised backing is breaking down, leaving a fine black dust on the car's carpet. While washing and drying the mats I had to handle them carefully to avoid the stuff coming off in larger granules. Does anyone know of a spray on binder or flexible glue - perhaps a further coat of "rubber" to hold it all together? Any suggestions welcome.

I agree - new mats.
Look them up on feebay. You will not find the same quality mats  You can order some from the stealership at a great wallop from your wallet.

The crumbling rubber will make your life a misery. The particles get ever smaller as the backing disintegrates and is harder to clean up.

I just scraped all the crumbling black crap off the back of the mats, gave the backs a coat of clear sealant......problem soved. I did this because the mats themselves were in very good condition.

I know a guy who went to a lot of trouble to remove all of the backing, before applying contact adhesive and a layer of black urethane closed cell foam sheet to the back of his mats.
By the time he was done stuffing around with it, it would have been cheaper to buy new mats.

The result was okay, but to be honest, the carpet was still 26 years old.

I just picked up a new set of carpets for my Interceptor. The chap that owns the business in Dandenong stated it's now a huge challenge to order different colour carpet, apart from beige and black) as most suppliers supplying the auto industry are closing down. It will become more of a challenge moving forward to source carpet matts for a lot of the different 126 colours, such as Brown, Blue, Red, Green.

For MB, GAHH and World upholstery, KHM etc have the carpet in the narrow-loom (50 & 60") widths for all the styles and colours- and they all manufacture the carpet sets for Mercedes among others.

Most of the MB carpets were manufactured in Germany anyway, so it's unlikely that local retailers here would have made them, other than for the early CKD Finnies, which had local content...
