Your gumtree ID had a typo, but I think I found it.

Umm, that's not a W123. Nice car, but it's a W124.

Yep, I had a 230TE for over 5 years. The engine and gearbox are bullet proof, but the plastic items far more brittle than the billet-style of a 123. Enjoy !

Ever read "Wind in the Willows"?
I'm a bit like Toad of Toad Hall. I embrace new experiences with great gusto, however, unlike Mr Toad I do stay with my new adventure for some time. Buying and driving these beautiful machines has got me "champing at the bit" to get to work on the 300SE W112 Finnie. Rear doors and front fender are on the way and now I just need to organise Sills and some rails. Watch this space.

So you have purchased 2 Mercedes in 1 week, and for one of them you were not sure which model you were buying. You are an addict, and you are rapidly becoming the Keith Moon of Mercedes.

Many of us on the forum have something which prevents this kind of compulsive behaviour. It is called a wife. Either you don't have one, or yours is malfunctioning badly. Or, you have one of those highly sought-after
"Yes Dear, whatever you want" models - few of us are that lucky.

While I agree that these are great cars and are pretty cheap, 2 in 1 week sounds slightly excessive. You will end up like CraigB ...

Yeah the W123 and W124s are great as Finnie parts getters! :laughing6: :laughing5:

Seriously though that W124 looks ace and you will really enjoy it - modern enough to drive everyday but still with that solid classic MB feeling. Along with your W123 it should be a very cheap car to own and run.

Just moving and stickying this topic. It's perfect as a candidate for humour and satire, and therapy.

People, feel free to reply to this topic with your own confessions. It can be like an MB AA meeting or something.

My Name Is Joe B. I am an Addict.

I have 4 Mercedes at the moment. I'm downsizing. Technically I only own 3 of them, but JG has left a white 123 230E out the front of my house for the last 18 months, in exchange for a place in the queue in his workshop.

I'm hoping to reduce my wheel collection also, but this does not seem to be occurring. I only managed to alleviate the issue by sending the polished 14" bundt's to Craig B as I know he can use them on his 3.5, and I do not have a car that has brakes the wheels fit over. In hindsight they would have made excellent trailer wheels, but alas, they are gone and my other half is rejoicing in the fact we have one less Mercedes and her shoe collection continues to outgrow the establishment we reside within.

The world is not fair.

Konrad - I noticed that the W124 you just purchased and the car in your profile picture both have "KM" plates.

Did you happen to buy them off the same person, or is this some happy coincidence?

KM = Kalamunda, the shire/town in which the cars were registered. There's loads of different plates, here's an old list with the some of the main ones: http://www.avonvintagecars.org.au/PDF/W ... tes%20.pdf
Some of the shire plates incorporate a few different places, like CMT is Cunderdin-Meckering-Tammin.

Back on topic, My name is Trent and I'm an addict.

The addiction has been passed down to me, as my folks were probably using M-B technical docs for rolly papers when I was in the womb. From there I spent all of my formative years chauffeured around in various M-Bs, from the 300SE that is now Konrad's, through a 111 3.5, 109 6.3s, 107 SLs, 116s to 126s and beyond. I have been lucky enough to drive a range of these cars which has only increased the severity of my disease.

I currently have 1 Mercedes, which is my third since March 2012. In the time since then I would guess that 75% of my waking hours consisted of thinking or reading about Mercedes, including this forum. I need help.

I can't say I'm addicted yet but I'm getting close. I've only owned my 124 300D for a few weeks and it needs an alternator rebuild.

Talking to the mechanic it was nice to hear him say that these earlier cars can be fixed and not made of throwaway items which were never meant to last.

There seems to be a lot of well looked after older Benz's out there for very little money. It will only be a matter of time before I buy another. My wife is well trained in letting me buy whatever I want.

Hello my name is Giles. I'm not an addict ( do you know where I can score some good go, I mean a Mercedes) by own admission, my wife who is in the health industry thinks otherwise.

I used to dabble, I mean own a W126, a W114 sedan and a W116 but I've moved on to C114's. I'm on to three of them at once now, can't get enough of them. Never had a bad trip on, I mean in one. A word of warning, don't every get in one with all the windows down, it'll blow your head right off.

They tend to be a bit smokey, oh yeah out the exhaust too. It's blue smoke man when you're heading downhill, but there's a fix for that. It's got the world biggest party bowl, I mean air cleaner. The injection system sucks sometimes, then coughs like it's got bongkitus, then sits up and parties again.

I know some straight people that aren't addicted to their Mercedes, you've seen them before. They hang around the dealers yards about every three years and go and spend all their money a on a new one. Only to throw money again at the dealer again because they don't want to get their hands dirty fixing their habit. Bloody junkies I reckon.

Regards,

Giles

If you buy 1 you like it. If you buy 2 you enjoy it. If you buy. 3 you my friend are a collector. I f you have 4 then yes you are an addict. I was once told owning a 6.9 will take your money, patience, and sanity and may even cost your marriage and take your soul. So far they have now survived 2 marriages .

He would be located very approximately at the intersection of a a line drawn east-west through Brisbane and a line drawn north-south through Warwick. Rather a large collection of cars in various states of degradation. Makes my current collection comprising 500SLC, 300TE, two 190Es (not counting the parts car), Mini and motorkhana special look a bit insignificant since selling my 350SLC. Mind you, I'm working towards another worthy addition to the collection (as the saying goes, watch this space). My wheel collection on the other hand is something even I will admit to being possibly more than just an addiction. :dontknow:

This also made me think of another addicted collector. Have a look at this aerial shot. Almost every one of those cars is a Merc in a state of decay (the property is almost at sea level close to a creek, mudflats and mangroves not far from the ocean). The buildings house more cars and a huge collection of parts.

I "think" i am one of those - "my wife definitely says i do need help"

My period W126 collection of anything MB/AMG in terms of coupes (3) - spare engines (2) - parts (lets just say "very many")
Period AMG totally obsessive with suspension components/panels/spoilers/steering wheels/ period AMG rims collection i lost count @ 100 (i keep telling myself its the same as a wine collector)
My interior SEC cabin parts/components/instrument clusters/panels/trim/leather collection is definitely bordering on total madness.
Proceeding to do full AMG widebody kit conversions to both the black and the white SEC (yes another full WB kit is arriving by ship this month- i must be mad)
So Yes i am afraid it is time to call in the therapist and cart me away to the MB medical clinic

Edit- just spotted that pic above of the overhead shot - now that is insane (more like a wreckers yard)

Many of us have been there and many of us have stories of the futile attempts at wresting parts from his grasp. I wonder sometimes if he is in business or just a hoarder.
I went to the old boys place here recently who has a 600 advertised. The place is full of dead and decaying Mercs...and Rolls Royces. Unfortunately he sees them as being worth money...I can too. about $50 per car to the local Afghani's . :laughing6: :laughing6:

Many of us have been there and many of us have stories of the futile attempts at wresting parts from his grasp. I wonder sometimes if he is in business or just a hoarder.
I went to the old boys place here recently who has a 600 advertised. The place is full of dead and decaying Mercs...and Rolls Royces. Unfortunately he sees them as being worth money...I can too. about $50 per car to the local Afghani's . :laughing6: :laughing6:
Apart from the fact that he is about 170km and almost 2 hours away from where I live, I had never visited on the basis of his reputation. That was until about 7 years ago when someone I know was on good terms with him and suggested I go there with him because he had some items of interest to me that he agreed to sell. Not only did he sell them to me but the price was very reasonable. I actually expected these items to be aftermarket copies but I needed to be careful not to show my excitement when I realised they were the exceptionally rare and highly sought after genuine MB originals. To this day I am still surprised he sold them to me at all let alone for the price he wanted.

I was also allowed to wander around the property inspecting all the cars and parts only to find some other items I wished to purchase. You can imagine my surprise when these were thrown in at no additional cost with the items I had originally gone there to purchase. My experience with him was completely different to what I expected and I found him to be very reasonable to deal with. I suspect it was because I was with someone he got along well with and possibly because I was careful not to be a nuisance.

Often in these cases the reception is based upon ones ATTITUDE. If one goes there expecting to be rebuffed then that expectation will show in subtle ways which, while you might have tried to conceal, is obvious to the other party. One should go there with an open heart and a willingness to give (friendship, company, help) rather than just to get something. Many years ago I had cause to visit the Mayor of Redland Shire (in Queensland) to obtain details of building approvals, for my reporting business. This request had been made, by others, many times in previous years and had constantly been refused. The mayor was described to me as an absolutely impossible man, an ogre. As he was a man of some years I assumed that he was a grandfather and so, on the way down from Brisbane formed mental pictures of him playing with his deeply loved grandchildren. Tickling them, telling them stories, bouncing them on his knee, chasing them (squealing) around the back yard and watching their faces light up as they opened their presents on Christmas day. I was trying to get in touch with the "other side" of this man. Needless to say I received a warm welcome and within half an hour walked away with what had been denied to so many others. Ask what you can do for this person, get to know them and you might be surprised.

Yes, he runs it as a business. Search "herscheid restorations".

http://benz-australia.org/ actually wonder how he gets away with using a .org extension :dontknow:
Well technically if it's a business then it's not really classified as an addiction.
We're talking hardcore junkies here, not the dealers in the shadows who make money off the addiction.

Steven,

You have known me probably longer than any other member of this forum and would be aware that my "addiction" for the marque goes back to my youth. As a school kid I knew I wanted to drive a Merc. Whilst my first car wasn't a Merc, you witnessed me purchase my first one, my 350SLC, in my early 20s. Since purchasing that car I have not purchased a car from any other manufacturer.

My favourites have always been the higher performance models, the rare models and those with a motorsport history. During my ownership of the 350SLC, I became aware of the 5 litre SLC cars campaigned by the factory in the world rally championship back in the late 1970s and 1980. Therefore a 5 litre SLC became a car I desired and eventually purchased, despite believing that being LHD only would mean that none would ever come here let alone one falling into my hands.

There is another performance model with a motorsport history, my desire for which possibly goes back even further than my desire for the 5 litre SLCs. Not as rare as my 500SLC but still not very common here. I have known of a particular example of this model with a unique provenance and its owner has asked me if I am interested in purchasing it. Discussions have been taking place over a considerable period of time which gives SWMBO more time to get used to the idea, a good thing given she believes we have too many cars already. The sale of the 350SLC helped my argument somewhat and the motorkhana special along with its trailer will need to be sold to create the necessary garage space and earn a few more "credit points".

Beyond that I don't want to say any more at this time. If the transaction takes place, all will be revealed on OZBENZ. Yes, I am a Merc addict and if my car collection doesn't sufficiently prove the point, my stash of wheels under my house should do!

Never doubted it would have a star on the bonnet, just wasn't sure if you were "collecting" or providing future transport for son #2 to join he 190 you acquired for son #1. Great to hear it's all about you this time. Yes the SWMBO is a challenging hurdle but not insurmountable. Addict? As the saying goes; one is too many and a hundred not enough. I must say I'm intrigued by the secrecy Greg. The car that shall not be named must be something really special.

Well I do have 4 x Mercedes, so suppose I am addicted..... 4 is enough for now though and one will most definitely only ever be a parts car, but you never know....
Not much action of late and not many posts here either.... but I drove my white 250 S on the weekend as a lead car for a bicycle event. Was heaps of fun and raised some money for a good cause.

Anyway back to the cars.....
AVVVV.jpg
2 very much driveable and grey one could be close..... if I ever get any time to work on it....

Cheers

Don´t know if i´m an Addict. Decide for yourself!

Here is the short story of the tragic end of my first Mercedes and the beginning of a never ending obsession. It´s taken from real life…

We are in the year 1982. The parents of a girlfriend have bought a new 380SEC just now. Thus their 1971 300SEL 3.5 (W109) has become needless. A dealer offers DEM 2000,- for it. So do i ! I´m the owner of a Mercedes Benz! And this is the beginning of a never ending obsession… I´m infected by the “Incurable Mercedes Virus (IMV)”.
The W109 is driveable. But there is a special feature of elder German cars: RUST! If you are not familiar with the German road watch, you must know that a single snowflake or even light frost triggers an orgiastic application of road salt in order to prevent a chaos on the roads… An armada of gritting vehicles is spreading millions of tons of highly corrosive de-icing salt. So it´s no surprise, that most elder cars with no rust prevention rapidly get pitted. My twelve year old W109 is quite good, only the sills and the fenders have to be repaired. In 1982, a W109 is nothing but an old Mercedes! So I decide to patch the holes in the sills and the fenders provisionally. After a partial repainting and a repolish, the car looks pretty good.
The air suspension makes the usual trouble. But there´s no serious problem! After having started the motor, you just have to wait for some minutes to bring the body up... The interior is nearly immaculate!

Wow, i own a S-Class Benz! What a feeling! It´s like heaven on earth.

Unfortunately, the parents of my girlfriend can´t give me a realistic estimation of the fuel consumption of the V8 engine… Moreover, the oil crisis has pushed up the prices of gas. And i´m just a student. Each trip to the gas station ends with a deep hole in my pocket. The fuel tank of the W109 has a capacity of 90 litres. I have to be realistic and reasonable or I would get ruined by that car!
So i decide to make a final ride on my Benz to the Gulf of Biscaya (Bay of Biscay, southwest France/ northeast Spain, 3000km all in all) together with some friends. I´ll never forget that awesome journey.

Back at home, i sell the Mercedes to a “greaser”. The guy is the second chief of the local Hell´s Angels… He is a goon with bad manners, but he offers DEM 5200,-for the car. I agree with a heavy heart. Three weeks later I must hear, that the W109 is in Mercedes heaven and the “Angel” has gone to hell… What a pity! (on the W109)

A 300 SEL 3.5 is not a toy for a dumbass!

Only a few parts of the car survived the crash, because I kept them for myself in my garage: The two wheel chocks, the original Hazet water pump pliers 150 mm, the rubber mats and the ancient number plate "KL J 704". Today, I care for a W120 180D and an A124 E220 convertible. The pliers and one of the wheel chocks are now in the trunk of the 180D. Each time I see these relicts, I yearningly remember my first Mercedes. I Guess that´s symptomatic for that IMV...

Juergen

PS: There´s no antidote to IMV.

I agree with John Green:

Thanks for the story Juergen. That would be a very cool first car. Davide Frada that many know and was an early administrator of this forum, had a W108 3.5 as his first car (now in my ownership) and shortly after a 109 like yours that i believe he saved from a wrecker but with a bit of work was a really nice car. My first was a 1960 Morris Oxford - oh the agony - through a rapid succession of cars was many years before I saw the light at about 35. Reminds me of a recent comment from a tradie mate of mine who said at his 50th - "yep I always thought i would be driving a Benz by the time i was 50 - just didn't picture it as a Benz Van!"

My 'drive car' now is a Landrover Defender because i need the 4WD for working now and its massive towing capacity is very useful, but just prior to that my drive car was a 560SEL. The theory was to sell that, but it is hard to say goodbye to that car and they really aren't worth a lot. Also both my sons have declared it their favourite car (not the pagoda or the AMG etc) and for sometime it has been named 'Zac'. Any mention of sale usually brings tears to the eyes of my 9yo and grumpiness from 11yo who says, can't we sell one of the others! And so it remains!

And back on the thread topic, i noticed i hadn't responded but that's because i am not an addict - just like all those people who drink too much and haven't been to AA yet! Addiction has that negative connotation to it - no negatives here!

An "Alcoholic" is someone "who drinks more than you". So (I guess) we can use the same logic for MB collecting.
Providing we can find another who has it worse than do we, then we are OK.
"I'm not a drunk" "look at Fred over there" "he's a drunk" "
I don't agree that hoarders have a problem. I have 112 acres (45 ha) and would rather see a classic car sit and return to the earth than be sold for a few hundred dollars to someone who has no respect.
I have, at times, even considered setting aside a part of the property for a MB "retirement" home and already have what's left of Bartman4800's Finnie sitting right outside my front door.

Let´s talk about Passions

Post by 1961blueroundy » Sun 06 Dec, 2015 6:33 am

Hi Craig, hi Konrad!

Craig, you´re absolutely right! The word "addiction" should not be used in that context. "Passion" would be ok for me. My MBs are not essential to life... My current passion for MBs is only one passion among others. In my life, some passions have gone by, others have remained. The W120 180D will never be sold, that´s for sure.

Konrad, do you know Flynn´s Wrecking Yard near Cooma/NSW? If not:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/kidgeezer ... 528871180/ The pics might inspire you!

I´d like to know, if there are any MBs hiding in between the Yank´s sledges...

My email provider published a related picture show last week. Seems that Australian junk yards are in the center of current interest. In contrast, Australian policy isn´t worth a subject... So i heard about that cranky guy named Jim Flynn. He had the same idea like you, Konrad! But already fifty years ago!
You won´t find anything like that amazing wrecking yard here in GER. That´s absolutely impossible!
It might be enough to park a single deregistered car on a lawn (outside the housing areas) to get some very serious problems with the environmental protection agency... :protest:

Taking nothing from the great humour of the original thread title - I have been confronted with a clean out in the late 90's. I had been collecting cars at that stage since my teens and before I met my then wife, but 14 or so years later we decided to go our separate ways. She was a solicitor so there was no arguing with 'the rules' and a split down the middle meant any car i chose to keep I had to buy back half of, even if i had owned it before we met. I decided to keep my 1968 Alfa 1750 GTV that was my drive car at the time (and still very much in love with) and my 1924 Amilcar that i had built from a chassis and a motor. But the rest went and i have never really regretted it and overall was refreshing to have a fresh start. Once the sale of the house went through it was only a month or so and i was on a plane to the UK with nothing but a backpack and that was a completely fresh start with virtually no baggage. I have good memories attached to pretty much all my cars, but you don't lose those memories when you sell them. My main concern is if i had a heart attack and died tomorrow, there is a bit of a mess for Jo to clean up, but i have good friends that i am sure would help her. I hope i live long enough to still clean up myself.

[quote="1961blueroundy"]Hi Craig, hi Konrad!

Konrad, do you know Flynn´s Wrecking Yard near Cooma/NSW? If not:

Mmmmm........ a little disturbing.
Perhaps some trees planted between the graves might soften the sense of desolation.
Returning to the earth in a forest might present a more gentle process.

I've just acquired another W126 (420SE), I now own 3 x W126 short wheel base models. My friends think I'm mad, but I thoroughly enjoy each W126 as they all have there own character

85 280SE, purchased for $2K in April 2016. From an exterior/interior and mechanical perspectives this is my best car. These Gen 1 M110 6's seem to be unloved, but I thoroughly enjoy driving it. Yes it's down on power, but the engine sounds so different (more mechanical) as opposed to my two other W126's.

88 300SE, this is my daily driver and workhorse (Inherited from my late Father). It's got 280K on the clock but still drives extremely well. Has more torque than the 280, which is noticeable around town. Has a few scratches and marks, evidence that it's been on school pickup duty

91 420SE, this is the most comfortable W126 I own, has soft leather with electric seats. Not a huge difference in a 0-100 sprint with my 300, but more effortless. A nice cruiser on highway. This is my current project, needs a tidy up and a few things fixed;
- Becker 1402 in for service (Power Supply issue)
- Gear shifter wood trim being refurbished
- Drivers door cladding needs to come off, as need to replace chrome strip
- Leather (airbag) steering wheel needs to be re-dyed (be good to get some tips on anyone who has done this)
