28th April,

Had the rear bumper repaired after an altercation with a tree left it "less than perfect", also had an 'A' service done identifying some rising problems that need attention sooner than later i.e. Rocker cover(s) seals are leaking & the spark plugs are way overdue for replacement... :naughty:

Tidying up the radio wiring and fitting a rear seal to the back hatch on the W110 Wagon . Apart from brakes and clips for the moldings,it's almost ready to go.

What did you do to your benz today?

Post by ansteadeh » Sun 31 Mar, 2013 6:31 pm

ANF - to spectate. She and I are regulars out there. We stopped by the pits last night and watched a compete tear down and rebuild of a top fuel motor - 40 mins from engine block to startup.

If you haven't experienced close up the start of a top fuel motor, you should check it on YouTube. Tis a different proposition standing beside one!

What you don't experience with youtube is the intense noise, shock wave and the stinging of the eyes from the nitromethane and methanol. 8000 HP 0-160klm in 0.7 seconds all the way to 500 klm hr in 400 Mtrs.

There was an OZ record set last night for top fuel dragster and bike

Finished off the service I started 2 weeks ago in the Finnie as I have a short rally coming up. Even checked the front brakes -these things just do not wear out....

I did notice that I loose a bit of oil out of the diff breather -the usual answer is over filling -but I am just filling to the level of the oil filler. This is on level ground and the rear wheels in there normal position (ie not jacked up). Any ideas?

I have only been to the drags once and it was many years ago, do not think that there were any top fuelers there  but what was there made a lot of noise - jet powered truck - damn that was noisy, with after burner roaring!! Scorched the tarmac from memory.
Not an overly big drag scene down here and the only track is up north.

Cheers

Cleaned the baby Jebus out of it. Mesh rims are so hard to keep clean on a daily driver! Also came to the realisation that I really need better front and rear bumpers. They really are a little shabby. :sad11:

The breather just screws into the top of the axle tube, Unscrew it and see if it damaged . As long as you filled it without the the axles hanging down but level it will be OK and what you see is possibly a bit of oil condensation from lots of use. They are never dry as a rule.

In my teens I virtually lived at the Drags and crewed for a few different teams, It was completely different scene back then with many of cars being built by the drivers themselves. A few years ago i was at the brake place here in Wynum and ran into a guy i had met in 1972 who was racing a bike at the drags. A chevy 327 powered bike...

Wally Pushkey, he was also a league player back then too. In clearer versions of these pics i can be seen up on the pit fence with a few mates.

Great pichas Ron. I can remember going to Surfers Raceway around 1974 as an impressionable teenager. I think that's what got me hooked .... And now so is daughter.

Admittedly there is a small hitch with the car. The ECU requires re soldering. I have already identified the problem as a bent pin and broken circuit board.

What's more, car has new windscreen and wiper motor plus one month old tyres

Car had broken down. Seller took it to a non Benz specialist. I have to admit that this non specialist tried everything out to diagnose the problem. He nailed it down to the ignition control box.

Seller is sick of the car. Had been quoted up to $3,000 plus to get a new ECU and ignition control module. Plus all the other dollars he laid into it trying to get the problem diagnosed.

Had the car on ebay. Numerous auction winners turned up ,looked at the car and then wanted nothing to do with it. :bs:

Ooops

Didn't do much in mine. However, the guy next door just purchased a new C250. We spent some time teaching it to recognise his voice. Then I took it for a drive on the open road. It is indeed a lot more zippy than my lumbering W108, but I suppose it is 43 years younger and has 43 years of engine/suspension development in its favour - and it cost a whole lot more. Now there are two white Mercs in the street next to each other I am hoping for a domino effect.

Nothing on my own cars but spent a bit of time on Drews blue diesel. No it wont start. Injectors need work i think and possibly a new pump diaphragm but other wise the engine seems OK. better than the rest of this sorry rats toilet... :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6:

In ten years your W108 will be worth more.

In ten years if that new C250's voice recognition breaks down the repair cost will be more than the car is worth. :bom:

Removed the intake manifold on my 6.9 and broke 3 bolts in the process. Have a bit of work to do before it can all go back together.

Discovered that the air slide is not closing completely, so if anyone has a spare they don't want, and it works, I would be interested, Any W116 450 SEL or W126 380 will work I believe.

Sunday is rally day. 320km in the rally and another 220km to and from. It was around the NSW Central Coast -much of it in built up areas which is not ideal in an old car with no power steering. With my number 1 navigator off at a school camp, my wife and daughter called the directions. Yes we are all still talking ... The car performed very well -no issues which is a great credit to the vehicle as it has done 1200km in the last 2 weeks and not missed a beat. Greg and his wife where also there in the 500SLC, and there was also a 380SEC in the run.

Cheers

Steve

1... Had the spark plugs changed (done 112,260Km) fitted same type, 12 BOSCH FR8DPP33+... Noticed a distinct improvement in get up & go!!!

2... Had correct air filter fitted after previous servicing agent fitted wrong filter leaving a large gap for leaf matter etc. to get in not to mention all the sand & other crap...

3... Did an under carriage check all along the car with the mechanic & found small cracks in the prop shaft flexible couplings... To be monitored during follow up maintenance...

4... Cabin filter checked & cleaned, all ok... :happy3:

John...

Edit: The last digit on the spark plug # is a + sign I think going by whats on the invoice... :error:

Left the Golf at home and took the w126 to work instead. Needed to get a rego inspection done anyway.

Hi all

My mate decided he wants go faster in his C32, it's already fairly modded, but once you have power, you always want more... in short now does 0-100 in around 4.2 seconds... pulls very very hard...

Here some photos i snapped with a few bits and pieces off before me and dad started fitting everything back together... happy to say my mate has his car back now, and is noticing the significant G-Force increase.

Nothing today except fill the 420SEl with scrap from around the place before it goes on it's last journey to to the scrap yard. Amazing how much stuff had acumulated here. I can actually move around without tripping over 'stuff'. yesterday i fired up the W110 station wagon to make sure all the guages work (they do) and all the electrics work (they do) now i just have to figure out why i cant get the brakes to work ..

Dropped the front end yesterday. Still scavenging bits. The steering box bolts are playing hard ball. Just got the fuel lines, steering box, wiring loom and rear end to remove. Then it's off to the scrap yard.

Installed ECU in my newly acquired cheap W202 C200. ECU is an alternate to the original. Car fired straight up
Took it for a spin. Requires engine mounts.
Washed it - come up very well. No dents in bodywork or tears in upholstery. Very good for sub 1K$

Price for ECU at Stealership : $2,800.00 +gst :bs:
Price for original ECU sourced from the U.K. : $800.00 + shipping
Price to repair ECU in Germany : Around 250Euros plus bothway shipping.
Price for Ivanerrol's alternate ECU (original Bosch MB unit) : $ 165.00 :snooty:
