Zero feedback - probably doesn't exist at all. Those plates look NSW and I'd bet a lazy five that the background to some of those shots is Rushcutters Bay in Sydney.

It was on car sales for about 4 months priced in the high 70'k mark which was cheap in comparison to other 190's on there and it was located in Sydney. It dropped off about 3 weeks ago but it's now back on car sales again at the same price as gumtree. :dontknow:

Yeah, so if it was on carsales that explains where they got the pictures from. So if you call them will they ask you for a $1000 deposit or ask you to send the money via western union and then they will email you the car keys? :drunken:

Fail on the price too, sure it's a 2.6 but Jap import with issues, you can buy 2 or more 300E's for that money and have the same sort of performance, plus a bit more room.

Carsales has a wonderful new tool that writes add text for you. I generates some excellent results, including this example where the standard vehicle has 16" rims, but the one in the picture clearly has 17' rims.

The one at http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/MERCEDES-BEN ... 1153486224? is a fail on numerous counts. The boot badge on the wrong side is a badge fail. Then there is the combination of metallic black exterior (complete with cracks revealing a light colour beneath) with green dash and cream seats. The upper console is finished in vinyl as for an early model but the lower console is the walnut of a later model and the after-market gear knob is a different timber. The odometer shows over 73,000 miles so I wouldn't take too much notice of the claim "IT'S ONLY DONE 73000 KMS." :bs: Presumably following the colour change repaint various bits of exterior trim were never refitted but they found time to fit non-original wheel arch trims. Then there is all the rust with who knows how much more hidden by the repaint. I bet that rear window that is lowered in the photos is like that because it can't be raised. The seller has a zero feedback score and yet already 9 bids have driven it above where I believe its price should be. :dontknow:

Well, that one finished up at over $4k with 14 bids. Maybe those who bid it to that price inspected it and spotted something that made it appealing, like $3k in cash hidden under a seat!

On the subject of SLCs, the one at http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1979-Mercede ... 1404243778 appears fairly clean, but I think it may be another candidate for a "Fail". Listed by a dealer under the heading "1979 Mercedes Benz 450 SLC 67,000 klms genuine. Immaculate" sounds pretty convincing. The description states it as being his father's car personally imported from Japan last November. No mention of whether his father owned it prior to importing it or whether there is documented history supporting the 67,000km claim. It is left hand drive and has temperature gauge in degrees Fahrenheit (rather than Celsius) and oil pressure in PSI (rather than Bar). The speedo (with odo showing 67,000) however is in kilometres which raises doubts about the stated distance travelled. There is also an exhaust temperature warning light, something that I thought was only fitted to North American versions with exhaust catalyst. The wrong (for a 450SLC) front lower bumper suggests a replacement (for a US bumper perhaps) and the headlight aim adjuster appears to be absent (suggesting it was possibly originally fitted with US headlights). There are also what appears to be extra warning lights or similar under the dash, something I also recall seeing in US models. Finally, if it has travelled only 67,000km, why would the fronts seats have needed replacing? They are SL seats with manual backrest release lever (SLC had vacuum backrest locks and therefore no lever).

So,
What triggered the belief that it is an import?
The MPH & Km/h speedo? To me that indicates it is a UK import.

No auto climate control.
The two wheel manual variation seems to be much more reliable anyway.

...And any Oz-delivered Merc after about 1972 should have a km speedo and odo. Any after that time in miles (or miles with a second smaller km scale) shows it as being a private import. Of course, a km speedo does not guarantee it isn't a private import. Only some markets still used miles after Australia changed to km and some cars privately imported had their speedos replaced. One indicator of this is a metric speedo with non-metric minor instruments such as that white 450SLC in my previous post. If a speedo has been replaced, I would want some other supporting evidence of the distance travelled. In fact, a well documented history (as well as the general condition of the car) is the only reasonably sure guide of distance travelled.

I can understand a desire for more power but I can't imagine a cast iron V6 with cast iron heads doing any favours for the road-holding in a car known for its strengths in that department.

The seller says "Patina with satin clear coat", which presumably means he looked at the paint and said "That looks good, let's seal it" . :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

This is an unfinished project, and if the paint is anything to go by the seller should not be allowed to finish the rest under any circumstances.

I've seen this car, it's local. Couldn't bring myself to photograph it for fear of the lens cracking

It was mentioned in the other consolidated 126 thread, but since KimB couldn't bring himself to acknowledge the awful truth, I've put it here as a reminder that 126's are just as much candidates for atrocities against motor vehicles as any other model.
