I must say this is a very nice example, and it has been maintained by the Forum sponsor.

18k might be a bit of a stretch, but ask yourself whether you would like this car or a 2 year old Ford Focus?

"(one of the first 7 seater wagons produced...". 1983???

Really? When I was a kid, it seemed like almost every family had a 9-passenger wagon. We had several different ones over the years - including a '59 Rambler wagon, a '63 Plymouth Savoy wagon and a '67 Dodge Polara wagon.

Yeah, 18k seems a bit much, but it is a heckofa nice car!

If you look at how many trashed TE's that are out there, one this immaculate is probably worth close to his asking price....if I could get SWMBO to like driving a 123 (at. 5ft 2in, she find any 123's steering is too heavy :banghead: ) I'd gladly trade in the Suby for this any day

Another one. Is this a bit ambitious? At least the rusty bit has been shown in the photos, though that's probably not all of it.

There are a whole lot of things about that car that makes me think it has a LOT more than 19,500kms on it. The wear on the steering wheel alone says BS.

Nice car but, not "like it was just driven out of the showroom.".

A friend of mine had a look at the 230 on the off chance it was as it said. I wouldn't list him as a mate with really in depth knowledge but he has a pretty good idea. He said it is a really clean car and deserves to be 'saved' and not someones first car that just gets trashed. He thinks it has been repaired down one side and resprayed, so i guess there is something in the paint pattern - didn't quiz him too much. I didn't quiz him about the mileage either, at that it should really be like new and doesn't sound like it. Meeting him for a catch up drink tomorrow so will ask some more then.

It certainly looks pretty clean and straight in the photos. But .... in addition to the other indicators already mentioned, the wear in the b0ot mat and scratches on the boot lip look like its seen some more action than the odometer indicates as does the condition of the drivers floor mat. Also it's unlikely that someone went to the expense of an LPG conversion and then didn't drive it long distances to justify it. Still, if it shows nothing major on a PPI, it would still be worth considering at that price.

Talked to my mate again yesterday in more detail and he agreed no way for the 19k, but then it could be 119k and that is still a very low mileage for one of these cars. What he noticed straight away was deformation in the drivers seat that comes from many more k's than that. He also said the story he was told about ownership sounded unlikely but didn't go into detail. So once somebody tells one lie I just distrust everything said and makes me wonder what is being hidden. Perhaps the seller has had success before from making stuff up and profiting from it before? A bit stupid in this case though because my mate had cash in his pocket and was impressed with the condition eg. underbonnet was perfect, and said with a new seat pad and fairly minor things it looked like it could be great, but the dishonesty turned him away instantly. And of course the lpg and putting that back. But as a $5k run around, if it has done say 119k, really nice looking car, great style, very economical to run, huge number of trouble free k's no doubt....... but what are they hiding, why the need to lie?

I notice the W123 sold for $4980..... and is back on the market claiming scam bidder. Hopefully not a mate doing dummy bids to drive the price up. And also an additional note that the books have been lost by the original owner. Looks like someone is interested and bidding, i just hope they are not doing that based solely on the description given.

From engine number must be iron block 450, but then that 500slc badge must be worth something! Ir it is a joined 500sel and 450slc badges joined. Maybe if the badge came from a wreck it is an alloy bootlid too?

There must have been a special on 500SLC badges at some stage, the 350SLC I bought home yesterday has one.

Hmm,

With that many spelling errors in the advert, my suspicions always rise instantly.
Something tells me this is some bogan trying to flog his mate's Merc

Especially when he promises to pay 3500 aud to the winner :laughing6:

Interesting how a shadow of him + Iphone appears in every picture.

I'm not an expert and this is relying on googling, but the iron block 4.5 is M117.982 and some numbers around that whereas alloy is M117.960 and numbers around that from what i can see. Is there anything to suggest it is anything but a 450 with a 500 badge and a boot spoiler? Looks nice enough though as long as there isn't piles of bog under that nice shiny paint!

His reference to 450SLC 5.0 & 500SLC has absolutely no substance to it.
It is though a nice looking 450SLC.

I have sent this message to the seller as he has asked why I thought it was not a legit 500SLC.

Here is my perspective of why your car is not a 450SLC 5.0 nor a 500SLC.

They were never made in RHD.
They have the VIN prefix 107-026, 450SLC have the prefix 107-024
450SLC 5.0 & 500SLC were made from 1978 to 1981
Your pictured owners manual does not have any reference to 500SLC s
They were only ever European delivered
They have aluminium boots and bonnets
The boot has no handle on the 107-026
Your engine number is for a cast iron block, not alloy
Mine is the 1 and only 500SLC to be ever full time registered in Australia
Yours will not have the aluminium rear trailing arms that the 107-026 have
Yours is a 3 speed auto, 500SLC s have a 4 speed auto.
If the top radiator hose connects to the radiator on the passenger side, you have a 450SLC not a 5 litre
If you persist with your intent to pass this car off as anything other than a decent 450SLC you risk the possibility of being prosecuted for false advertising.
It appears to be a very nice car but no way 107-026.

What's your issue here Brad, are you insinuating that I'm a deceptive sales person? And with who I am employed with as a salesperson, may I ask?

Back to the facts, the seller does not have a 107-026.

I know of the chap with the murdered black 560SEL as he replied to one of my Gumtree ads and came to check out some wheels I was selling.

He purchased it from WA, paid $1500, it was originally a metallic blue, but paint had severely faded on roof and boot. He then vinyl wrapped car, cost ~$3000. The interior is grey and as in decent condition, but at the time the speedo was inoperative.

Yes, the aluminium trailing arms may have been in error, but was he to know?

"Mine is the 1 and only 500SLC to be ever full time registered in Australia"

How come?

Not sure if false advertisement laws apply to auctions or one-off sales.
Also not sure why the heartache over what is not first, last nor the only falsely advertised product.

I think WA is the only state you can fully register a LHD...... like the rest of the world!! Well at least i know UK and at least parts of Europe don't care where your steering wheel is.

Can you drive it anywhere in Australia Giles?

You used to be able to fully register in NT also. IIRC there was a guy in Lennox Head who drove around in a LHD w201 around 10 years back....used to bug me, as he clearly didn't live in NT and was cruising around the North Coast with his s'board on the roof, smiling away.....ok I've got that out now...

As far as I'm aware the other 107-026's in Oz are on Historic licensing, perhaps due the new regs that allow log book kept days. The version we have in WA is very limited in where and when you drive the car. I may revert to this but in the interim I can drive the car anywhere, anytime. This includes interstate as far as I'm aware.
