Fuel filler toggle

Post by carina » Sat 30 Jan, 2016 12:44 pm

Fuel filler cabinet toggle on a 1955 220 a Ponton. Attached is the image . Can anyone tell me what this is toggle is for? A look inside the guard reveals the line travels in tandem with the breather and the fuel fill pipe back down to the fuel tank . Why the toggle on the end?

It looks like the vent pipe/relief vent for the tank? Is it just a pipe that is cut off at 45 degrees? Finnies have a similar thing but the pipe sticks out from the left hand corner of the boot floor just behind the bumper.

Ok Murray at MB Spares says it's a strainer. A strainer on the breather , and the toggle cleans the strainer? I'm starting to have dreams about this thing!

Looks all a bit weird to me. That is an oil filler cap, not a fuel cap...

The toggle switch might be to stirr the oxygen in the fuel cells like on Apollo 13... :bs:

Maybe it belonged to an aircraft mechanic and it is to disable the battery while refueling to prevent accidental fire-causing sparks. :dontknow:

By using a switch that might spark??

Yes that fuel filler cap dose look like the oil cap, works fine tho. I'm taking the toggle apart for cleaning and paint so that should sort it out.

My first MB was the same year and model. My memory probably has some holes in it if I cast it back over 40 years, but I'm as certain as I can be that there was nothing like this in the fuel filler of my car.

Must be a 'one off'. Further investigation reveals its the breather . But why the toggle? A previous owner having a bit of fun maybe? I'm keeping it though it adds character and mystique.
