Wanted: W120 convertible modification

Post by 1961blueroundy » Sun 29 Nov, 2015 6:16 am

Hi guys,

i´m just doing some work of PI Thomas Magnum (PI)...

Has anybody any information about the discribed W120 in that post: http://forum.mercedesclub.de/index.php/ ... post122498?
Is that car still on the roads of Australia? Does anybody know the owner? I´m very interested in special W120 modifications, so i would by very happy to get any hints!

Greetings from Germany by 1961blueroundy,

Hi Jürgen,

so you followed the advice :laughing6: ... maybe give me the pics, I can post them here (cannot download them from vdh). You need 5 posts to be able to post them here in this thread ...

I expect they will respond in time, but if not, two people i would ask first are John Green and Ron Mercmad. If nothing comes up I would be happy to ask our only Benz dealer in Adelaide, especially if this long term employee Peter Ayton is still there, he remembers all sorts of stuff and if it was an adelaide car chances are it has been there at some stage or he has looked for parts for it.

They're making fun of us Aussies on that forum (listed above), not sure what they are saying, but I wish I could speak German so I could have a laugh as well. :laughing6: :laughing6:
They even posted a link to that burn out car that was on Gumtree (the one with the provocative number plate). The boguns here have a lot to answer for.
It's not true that Germans don't have a sense of humour.
Thomas, political correctness hasn't totally overtaken in Oz, there is a prominent sign in Southbank in Melbourne that says "Merry Christmas to all from the City of Melbourne". I was surprised and heartened.

We don't make fun of Aussies, not in this forum. I posted that link from here, yes, and the guys there - as I mentioned - have contacted the owner of the "gullwing". I didn't follow up what came out of it ...

Don't forget; Australia has a high standing here in Germany and with the Germans!

Hi Lance,

even the discussion is tending to get more and more off topic:

I fully agree with Thomas: Australia and New Zealand are highly esteemed by the german people! Maybe that there are some dumbasses here, who cannot imagine, how the antipodes down under can get along with their kangaroos, coalas, wombats and drunken aboriginees, but these people are dying out... Everybody cultivates his own stereotypes!

That Germans have no humour is definitely not true, but it´s sometimes difficult to understand the supercooled german nature. It´s a problem for me, as a german native, too. Maybe the grey and rainy days we frequently have to stand here in the northern europe oppress our minds...

Since my brother crossed Australia in a Camper (and brought back a million impressions and photos!) i´m dreaming of doing the same. But six weeks of regular vacation are not enough. So i´ll have to wait until i retire... And: No question, i´ll do it in a Mercedes Benz!

Best regards

Juergen (still hoping to find that remarkable W120 convertible )

What I thought when i saw 'they are making fun of us' was "good on them!" and if you can't laugh at yourself then that does say something about your sense of humour.

And i see you are over the line with your 5 posts Jurgen so post as many pics as you like now.

Hi Craig,

thanks for the information about the admittance to post pictures. The pics will come soon! I´ll see if i have some nice pics that show special european countryside in the background...

By the way: Can you explain to me the subtitle "Dernburg Wagon" under my avatar? Wasnt´t the Dernburg Wagon the first AWD car made by Daimler?

The 'Dernburg Wagon' is your rank - as your post count increases you move up the rank so to speak, starting off with an A Class, moving up to S Class, Pagoda, Gullwing etc.. etc.. Just a bit of fun, nothing to do with your car etc.

Gorgeous 180D by the way, the '59-61 4 cyl pontons with the wider grille and the large bumpers are my favorite roundie model!

I don't suppose you have any photos of that convertible showing an old number plate? Most states in Aus you can go to the transport department website and search the number plate to see if the car is still registered or not.

Absolutely, that is what I meant, make more fun please. Sorry for going off topic, I have nothing to add regarding Ponton convertibles.

there is a Australian modified ponton sedan/convertible in the USA too .it was a cream white colour. . i think ,and it's only a guess but Franz at big Toys in Sydney may have built them. Unfortunately most vehicle history files in Australia are buried in secrecy .God only knows why. In the 1960's it was quite a popular thing here to make convertibles out of sedans as there were still a few skilled tradesmen about who could do this work.

Oh, aand i think this car was in Brisbane a few years back on ebay. I wonder if this car red ?

No, unfortunately i have no such photos. I only know, that the convertible was offered on ebay in 2003 by an unknown australien, living by that time in Brisbane, Queensland. And the chassis-number is known: A121.010.6000230. Maybe there is a certain database in AUS, where one can trace back that number to the owner. Here in GER this would be possible, but never ever accessible for private usage...

Yes, the car i´m looking for was really on ebay in Brisbane in 2003. It was a W121 190, black. Is Franz in Sydney still alive and could he be contacted? Besides, in order to modify a ponton sedan into a convertible which could get a road admittance, you would need an exceptionally skilled tradesman. But I´m not convinced, if it´s possible at all. Here in Germany there are actually about two manufacturers who promise to modify older MBs (/8 or W111) coupes into more or less perfect convertibles.

It would be great, if you could look for further information...

Hi Juergen
I have found Franz a challenge in respond to emails etc even when he has items on eBay in the past so have visited his yard a few times. He is less than 10 min from my place so if you don't hear back in the next week shoot me a PM of what you need as far as info and I can drop in one afternoon and have a chat with him for you.

Hi Steven,

that´s a great offer, i thank you very much! I know a lot of cranky guys who are resistant against emails... That´s not a bad feature. A bad sign might be, that the link on Franz´ homepage to his mailbox doesn´t work. So i tried to send a mail directly. Seemed to be sucessful. Let´s see what happens. :dontknow:

What kind of music do australien mercedes enthousiasts hear while cruising towards horizon? Sometimes I hear this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKL4X0PZz7M I suppose these girls must be well known in AUS too. If not, it would be high time. Enjoy it! :love10:
