Reverse lights

Post by carina » Wed 12 Aug, 2015 8:29 pm

I have a few issuses with my 220a (1953) ,manual shift, that I hope someone can help me with.I have no reverse lights . Globes replaced, fuses cleaned and tested. I've looked at the manual (wiring diagram) and see that there is a reverse light switch. I have no power at the reverse light section of the tail light assembly on either side. Can anyone tell me where the reverse light switch is located and also the colour of the wire? Need this so I can get her back on the road.
Thanks

First , assume you have a 1955 not a 1953 220a.
Later pontons had a reverse light switch on the top of the gear box but yours probably had the switch on the shift assembly at the steering column near the firewall. This is visible from under the bonnet. Don't know wire color , but there should be 2 wires going to a gizmo ( the switch )on the shift assembly. Also -= the factory only had a reverse light on one side at the tail lights , can't recall which side but to avoid confusion with RW testers I rewired my 58 220s to have reverse lights on both sides.

Once you find he switch, engage reverse and turn the ignition on, and test for power at the switch. That will at least tell you whether to work back to the fuse box, or forward to the rear of the car. Also, unscrew the switch and make sure the pin is inside.

Thank you efirestorer and Agean for your replies. Sorry for the typo yes it is a 1955 year make.So now I have the location and a practical test , a great start and will cut down on the time spent. I'm getting on with it Saturday. I'm looking to do both tail reverse lights but getting one working will be a start. Agean what colour is your car? I've long admired the photos. Mine is Stonegrey tho seemed to be known as battleship grey, very apt.

To get both going is a hassle, there isn't a wire going to the other side and often there isn't even a bulb holder in there. If the RWC tester makes a fuss, just ask him how many cars actually had reverse lights in the 1950's? let alone just one.. :laughing6:
my 220a is a 1956 .

You can also show them the wiring diagram, which clearly only shows one.

That 218 lime green is a cool colour - and almost seems a bit to wild for a Ponton given the other colours of the time! I think Aegean or someone else on the forum was selling one a while back? It had a contrasting red interior and looked amazing!

Ok found it. In the images you can see I have no wires and only one screw, all I have to do now is test the switch and the find the wire (grey /red) that goes back to the tail light . Only trouble is the bonnet is so low so might have to take it off. Also I wonder if anyone has seen this car in the past as I would like to know more about its history. John Green remembers the car as a Canberra car in the 90's then the owner moved to Parramatta in Sydney. The wood and hood liner have been restored as has the seats.Images attached
