280 injected motor into 280s

Post by gez110 »

Hey guys,

A mate has a 280s with a knackered engine (sat for years with water in the bores.....) and a W123 280e. Has anyone taken a 280 injected motor from a w123 and fitted it to a 116 280s cary car? From what I can see i'll need to swap over the exhaust manifolds, fuel lines, vac lines etc.

Cheers

Steve

The simplest solution may be to swap the donor car engine and transmission, along with all engine electrics, into the recipient vehicle.

My main concern is ensuring the engine mounts will swap over as the w116 engine bay is different to the w123 i.e wider. Also, going from a carby motor to injected could cause a few issues. As in fuel pump, lines etc. The 116 is lovely and needs saving, the donor w123 is already mostly stripped and suffered a failed flex disc causing damage to underside and probably the trans. I'm a bit torn. He also has another w123 wagon that's running and solid.......... So many cool cars

How easy would it be to stick the 280s carbs on the 280e engine, is it just an inlet manifold swap or would I need to swap heads?

Should be easy, bolt intake and exhausts and engine mount including the long arm that bolts to the block from W116, then bolt straight in. Though W123 engine is low compressionso a bit less power. Or take intake manifold and full injection system from the W123.

Cheers Lance, i didn't know the w123 280 motor had a lower CR. The 280s motor in the 116 is seized unfortunately, hence the question regarding swapping motors from the w123.

Just drop it all in including fuel injection has as much power as the carby engine.

Finally agreed to buy the car! It's in very good condition, apart from the siezed engine! Stack fo service history, zero rust and good paintwork.

So, my plan is to use a donor 280 motor out of my mates wrecked w123 wagon. I'll swap the inlet manifold over from the cars original en gine to keep the swap simple.

While it's out, whate would you recommend changing, such as seals. I'm thinking crank mains, sump gasket, rocker gasket (tappets need adjusting) etc. I'll probably fit a new water pump too. Any recommendations?

Long term, I'd like to find and fit a mercedes V8.......

Yes, although not a massive amount of progress. The original engine is out and I've swapped over the parts to the donor engine. I've had to swap over the oil filter housing, oil lines, inlet manifold, exhaust manifolds, engine mounts etc. and have replaced as many gaskets as possible. It's ready to go back in, I just need to put aside a weekend to do it.

The only unresolved issue is to plug the injector ports in the head. I'm thinking if running a tap into them and then simply inserting a bolt.

No real need, just leave the injectors in there clamped down two at a time with the original brackets. Sure, it will look a little silly, but if some how you want it again as an injected engine it won't be runined.
