W116 Exhaust Y peice

Post by Lordluke » Sun 29 Jan, 2017 8:22 am

Hi
I have a 1979 280 SEL and the Y peice attached to the exhaust manifold has cracked in the Y. So what is the best way to fix it, welding, or perhaps replacing it with a latter M110 manifold conextion from a W123. Is is there a place one can buy a new one and at what cost???

Thanks

Grant

With mine I just had an exhaust place make up 2 pipes to carefully dodge the steering box. This is what it was designed to have as in LHD format and in RHD they took the easy road of into the y and back out again to dodge the steering box. It wasn't greatly expensive but you need a specialist exhaust place and preferably one that has been around for a while and hopefully has done one before. I never had any knocking issues and i think it sounded and went better but that was combined with replacing a dodgy aftermarket 'muffler' - also improved fuel economy but that was probably the muffler to resonator as they were. This place said that it doesn't matter how many new y pieces you put in they will always crack again in time and the 2 pipes is the only long term fix.

And at the time i took with me a pair of rear exiting manifolds, but the guy preferred to just do the pipes as is having done it numerous times before - also he said just as likely to break a stud or something and add to cost, whereas he left the old manifolds in place and just bent up the new pipes.

Hope that helps. I didn't see if you had a location of where you are - always makes it easier to make recommendations if you do.

Thanks for the info. I am Brisbane based, so hopefully you might be and can pass on your exhaust specialist heheh. Just wondering if your have heard of putting on extractors on a M110 engine.

There is a good core of knowledgeable people in Brisbane. You can see from my profile (to the right of this message) i am in Adelaide - If you put Brisbane in your profile then every time you ask a question the Brisbane guys might be able to help and will look out for you.

I don't know of any off the shelf extractors and would be big bucks to have a one off set made. The standard manifolds are pretty good though and doubt there would be a lot of performance difference.

Simplest method is just get the Y piece welded at the split.
Did mine 5 years ago and its still holding.

Many 116 owners have tried both methods and both fix ups solve the problem

Custom exhausts and manifolds may the way to go but in the long run.............................$$$$
I've since picked up a spare Y piece in seemingly good nick off a wreck and stored it for future needs. (The day WILL come.!)
