Nice, but I think overpriced for a car that needs work by the looks of it.

I think Craig that car would be worth about $15k

you don't see many for sale so makes it hard to gauge


This one sold at Shannons for $13k, last year
I think overall this car, body and interior was is in better condition

As you know at the moment I'm also looking for a 170, I have a limited budget of about $5k at the moment,

sure you are going to spend more overall restoring a car and get it back on the road, but for many people they simply don't have that amount of money kicking around to buy a fully restored car up front. Rather put the money into it over several years.



We also have the problem here in Australia that there seems to be very few 170 cars for sale,

Depends on condition and the market.
However the way I look at it, is that you are not getting a lot for your money.
No AC, no power steering, not even electric indicators. By todays standard they are very basic cars.
Also there is not a lot in the way of safety features.

But surely one doesn't expect any of that on a vintage or veteran - or even an older classic - car. Those are relatively modern features and would be entirely out of character in a W136. Of course, if one were to make an all-mod-cons hotrod out of it ... :P

Yes but one cannot look at buying a car of this period in the same light as buying an everyday runabout car.

If one wanted that you would be best to stick with an S Class.

So in fact the value is the oldness, I guess the bigger question is what will they be worth in the future?

In my opinion, I don't think there is any real value in any of these cars, unless it is the very rare models, or the cars that are really "as new"

Take a 170, a ponton, a W108, a W116, a W126 etc.. really a top condition car is only worth $15k for any of these models,

You might say your car is worth $20k, 30k, but you have to be able to get that for it,

so many cars seem to be for sale for months, or for years,

For me I'm not interested in the car gaining value, all I'm interested in is having enough folding to buy one.

For me it is the simple old world charm, the character that attracts me to these cars,

I'm with Des on this one.
Old cars are old cars, not meant to be judged by modern standards.
And yes, a top 136, 180, 116 or 126 is only going to be worth $15kish so it is a matter of taste which you want and why.
It will be a long slow wait for any of these to gain much in value, so spending now over $15k is a loser, and so is spending the same on a resto over the next couple of years.
So why do we do it?
Because we want to, the satisfaction, knowing another has been saved, driving something no-one else has, getting admiring looks at the lights, compliments and questions in the pub car park, all this and more.
I like that one that sold for $13k, I would say someone got a nice deal there.

In regards to the 170s pictured ( ONE-70) I know the owner personally as I live in Rockhampton.

I have seen the car on regular occaisions and can say it looks quite nice.

I cannot tell you much about the vehicle but can of the owner.

He is a genuinely upstanding professional whom I can say tells it like it is.

We have had numerous conversations about his pride and joy and I can tell you he is indeed a true enthusiast.

I cannot reccomend him highly enough.
