Al's Barn-Find - 1954 170 S-D

Post by bigal » Thu 01 Sep, 2016 2:27 pm

Hi All, My name is Al and I live in Tassie. I'm new here but a frequent on OzVolvo. I've been living in the audi, porsche and volvo world until I came across this gumtree barn-find. No, I'm not rich.. just an average-joe with an unhealthy addiction to quality old european cars. It's a 1954 170 S-D. The only history I have on it is that it was bought over 30 years ago by the seller's father and was sitting in this farm shed ever since. No engine.. nobody knows where that ended up. Most parts (not all) are there in various conditions. It's now out of that shed and in its new home in a storage room. I knew I had to save this from a hot-rodder. My plans are to preserve it as much as reasonably possible. It'll be a body off clean-up and the rust will be repaired. I like the patina so the outside will stay pretty much as is but clean.

My first task is to get it rolling on some pumped up tyres but I'm facing a challenge straight up.. It has 3x15" wheels and 1x16". The 16" seems to be the original. Can anyone help me out with getting a full set of steelies?

Also, if anyone knows any history of this one I'd love to hear about it. It was bought from the Colebrook region in Tassie.

Enjoy the Pics. Looking forward to a chat! Cheers.

Welcome to the friendliest forum on the net!

Looks like you got quite a challenge on your hands!
Am I correct in assuming that an SD is a more upmarket version of the 170D?

Can't help you with wheels, but here is a link to Kent Bergsma's 170D startup and he is selling one too:

Welcome Al, a big project but the end result will be worth it!

What are your plans for the engine? Repower it with an original diesel engine? Or fit a petrol engine from a later model?

Hi Guys! I'm all very new to Mercedes but from what I've read the S-D was a just a new label format at the tail end of the 170 production for the diesel version.

Regarding the engine.. I know of an OM636 and have first option on it. It's from a matching numbers 319 truck. Just deciding if I should split them or not.. the truck is a bit shabby.

Worth speaking to the forum sponsor, who has parts for this I am sure.

Shouldn't have too much trouble locating what you need, the 170 was (still is) a quite popular model.

The SA president might have some parts. My 1950 170s i am pretty sure had 15" wheels. I'm surprised to see the transverse leaf on the front still in '54, but that may have been a diesel thing. So could maybe 16" wheels. But JG knows these cars back the front and his dad restored a diesel, so never know what he might have in parts.

anyone got any old merc wheels kickin round?

I emailed MBSpares last week. Haven't heard back yet. Will give them a call tomorrow.

Keen to get this thing rolling asap so I can roll it on and off a trailer home to wash it.

i am pretty sure any mercedes wheel will bolt up to get it rolling. Mine had a trashed tyre and bolted a 15" w124 wheel on. Stud patterns are consistent to this day. Fitting over big brakes and maybe offset of some wheels could be an issue, but don't think it will matter just to get it rolling. Longer term though, I think a 'roundie' hubcap is the same and possibly wheels. Just not sure what diameter they are, or even what yours should have, like i was saying my 1950 was 15". Just some thoughts that might help your investigations.

Wheels were 5.5 x 16. Petrol versions were 15". Pontons are 13". Adenauers are 15". Not sure where you will find original wheels.

As to values, here is one that was sold in the UK last year.

There you go - the 16 is correct and the 15s off a petrol. Best of luck. I know JG dad's was a diesel so hopefully they have some spare wheels. The SA pres i mentioned would just have petrol stuff i think. Stuff tends to turn up though over time and like i said, i am sure modern wheels will get it rolling until they turn up.

Hey Al, I am impressed with your ambition - I took the easier option and purchased one where the body had already been restored (motor needed some work):

Mine is also a 1954 170 SD with the original OM636 diesel motor. Happy to help with any pictures of parts/part numbers etc that you may need to track down as you get yours back on the road.

Thanks for the input and advice guys! I appreciate it. I'm sure I'll be counting on you all to get me through the tough times on this one. I'm not afraid to tackle this, it wont be easy but feel I have nothing to loose and everything to gain! Going with the Patina should make it easier. Can't wait to drive this thing round to cafe's on a Sunday morning looking weathered and beaten-up. It should give everyone a laugh.

s2ksimon, That's a beautiful 54 170SD! Nice work. Do you have a thread on that one I can look at?

I called John at MBSpares and he's looking after me and going to help track down some 16" wheels. Hopefully I'll have receive some good news in a few days.

I'm currently finishing off a 1974 Volvo 145 barn-find project (getting it road-worthy). I'm almost at the end of this now so will be able to devote more time to the Merc soon. I have a decent Summer break coming up so most likely will make some big progress then.

I've been experimenting with surface rust removal on some of the Merc panels. Evapo-rust has worked well so far.. it has removed surface rust on my test area and left a nice dark finish where the rust was. The patina'd paint has been left untouched. It's looking great. I'll get some pics for you soon.

I've made the decision to bring the Mercedes home. The rent on the storage room is going up big time ($90 per month to $390) so going to pull out of the deal. This now means I need to get some rolling rubber ASAP. I have 2 weeks.

I will be modifying my woodshed to house the merc.

Looking at some wheels off a wrecked W126 tomorrow. I think the PCD is the same at 5x112.. I'm hoping that centre hole is big enough to fit over the dust/bearing cap.

Will update tomorrow.

Failing to find wheels....rent a dolly for the front axle and maybe a DIY welded platform on 4 swivel wheels?

I moved a few cars around like that...

A W124 steel rim is around the 67mm mark for the centre hole. Surely it will be the same for the W126 steel rim :dontknow:

And a little more detail, i didnt try the front, but a w124 rim definitely fitted the rear. I can check what w126 is but my recollection is it being the same. If anything later cars will have bigger hubs and bearings and therefore bigger hole - would be very surprised if they didn't fit.

Cheers guys! Good info there on the wheels. Very helpful.

The last couple of weeks have been busy. Managed to hold onto the storage place by subletting to some fellow Volvo friends. So all good on that front.

I'm nearly done with getting the Volvo 145 project finished off and it driving again.

Going interstate for work next week so should be able to give the Merc some TLC soon. Can't wait! The plan is still to get it rolling and home on a trailer for a good old bath.

Hellooo! Just a further update if anyone is interested.. My work trip is done, the Volvo 145 is almost at a stage where I'm happy with it (damn rear brakes stuck on so need some work on the calipers) and I have the last Volvo storage room mate moving in tomorrow.

Almost ready for some major Merc time. Quite amazing how busy life gets and how much effort is needed to free up time for things you really want to do.

Here's the thread on my Volvo 145 if anyone is interseted..

Cheers for the positive comments.

Hey Paul, yep it is me. I had a feeling you were about on here as I recall last time we caught up you were doing up a Merc. The Porsche isn't getting much use of late. Hope you and the car fleet are well.

Since my last update and had my first dose of Sciatica! Oh boy, that was not fun. Only just getting back to normal.. all car work had to come to a complete stop until I could walk again :-)

Visiting the Merc tomorrow and will hopefully fit some temp wheels. Pics to follow.

Update..

Saw a man about some wheels. They are chosen and will collect them this Saturday morning. These will get the 170 rolling on air so I can get it home on my holidays. 5 weeks off - Can't wait! My measurements indicate the wheels will fit.

The wheels are those 70's 'bundt' wheels and have put an example pic here. They might look a bit ridiculous on the 170 but just after anything that fits right now.

And attached is pic of the beast as it sits waiting for attention. "Soon my friend", I tell it,"Very soon".

Bought a set of hydraulic wheel dolly's also.

The beast needs a name Al! With those wheels "Bundy"!
You may end up on a barn tour of Tassy this holidays. I'm sure there are bits and pieces lurking somewhere. I'll keep asking.

Cheers!

Any help from anyone to find the obvious bits missing would be super! Especially in Tassie. I have my big volvo XC90 and a trailer so can drive round and collect things.

Looks like I have a few leads in Tassie on engines however the one thing I would really like are 3 more period correct 16" steel rims.

My holiday merc plan so far:
Wheels on
Trailer it home
Seal up the missing windows with plastic and tape
Big wash
Big vaccuum
Lots of photos
Unbolt the body and start cleaning up the chassis
Nuke the rust on the body (penetrating and/or bad rust will be repaired professionally)
Neatly organise parts and label everything

If I can manage all this I will be happy. I have other cars to play with and drive.. oh and a young kid to help look after. :-)

Thanks Brad. I think I will be going the international route like you suggested.

So today is the day the merc gets temp wheels. Unfortunatly the guy only found 3 bundt wheels but does have 2 steelies also. I don't think I need to be fussy with temporary wheels so will push on and get what I can. Time to get this thing mobile!

Picked up the temp wheels and..... they don't fit :banghead:

Collected 3 alloys and 1 steelie as that's all we could dig up. Neither fitted the front as the streering knuckle/joint thingy hit the inside of the wheel lip.

The alloy didn't fit the back as the bolts are too fat and no doubt would be the same issue on the front if it cleared that joint. The single steelie did fit the rear but no good to me having 1 wheel.

Wheels returned so no loss.

Decided to just push on getting the proper wheels now.. This may mean it doesn't come home over the holidays. Oh this makes me sad now.

John Green, are you there??

Time to call on the power of the OZBENZ community to locate some wheels.

Please post links to any further ebay finds.

I will try and contact John Green again and see if he's had any luck finding any. If any one sees him please ask for me also.

I've also just emailed the guy at www.classicmercedesbenz.co.uk

Going back to earlier posts, I fitted w124 15" - although not on the front but I imagine suspension for 15" petrol and 16" diesel would be the same. You are trying to fit 14" on but sounds like they will still work on the rear, which is where i put that 15" wheel. I don't know if all W124 are 15" for steel wheels. Gen 2 W126 are 15" but most i have seen have alloys and then you have the bolt/stud length issue to hold it on.

So if you can find the right wheels that is great and better still if they have tyres on them to be able to move. Bear in mind if you are going to take some time to complete the resto and need to put new tyres on the correct rims (which could be quite expensive) - am i right in saying a tyre can only be 10 yrs old now (Just i had a tyre place refuse to fix a puncture in one of my trailer wheels because it was more than 10 yrs old) and also tyres don't last forever and those expensive tyres could start cracking etc (like my Amilcar ones did) before you get to use them.

So just some food for thought, but maybe if you put a post in the W124 forum you might be able to find even just a pair of 15" steelies(and then get another 14" steelie to go on rear). I know you are in Tassie and sounds like not as many wrecking yards, but often a car with alloys can have a steelie spare and you might just find a couple of spare wheels in the back of a W124. It gets you rolling quickly and then while you are doing all the other work you don't have to worry about paint overspray etc etc of the wheels you will chuck that are sitting on there. But you know your situation and whats best for you - just offering the thoughts in case that helps.

Apologies also when i said i think any wheel would fit stud pattern wise and not thinking how the alloys had the long bolts for them. Will keep that in mind when i open my mouth next time!

The key search words for ebay.de is Scheibenrad . Then add the extra W136 170s etc etc.

Did you try and reverse the rim, for the "deep dish look" as the +ET wouldnt hit any of the driveline components.

The last ghetto resort would be to make up some rims in marine ply. Then you could roll it out of storage and get it home in time for santa

No worries Craig. I appreciate the advice!

Why didn't I think of reversing that steelie! Doh.

About to try ebay again and I'm making other enquiries at moment. We'll get there!

I did think of mercedes space saver wheels too. Can get 16" narrow ones from those merc suv's.

Hey Guys, I think I'm onto something. Been tinkering with the 911 the past week and noticed something interesting.. I have a narrow space saver spare wheel in the front.

Theoretically it should fit..

5x112 bolt pattern (Should fit)
70 or 71mm centre hole (Requirement is 67mm)
Steel wheel (No probs with getting the nuts onto the bolts)
Narrow (Should clear the steering joints)
15" (Should clear the old drums)

Here it is. These are made by Lemmerz and can find them online fairly easy. They came with 912's, 911's and some VW's.

Thoughts? I better go down to storage and give it a try.

If the stud pattern is the same it would should only be the other clearance issue that might come into play. The larger center hole would not be an issue if it is just a temp solution to get it rolling.

Sure has been quiet.

Lots been going on in my world. Decided to focus on one car at a time as have to juggle funds and dad duties carefully.

Porsche is in a happy place and running well. Fuel hose and pump issues sorted.

XC90 needed pcv kit done and front brakes sorted. Critical as is a daily.

$1000 worth of parts on their way from Germany for the old volvo 145 so I can get a pits pass and drive it. Been waiting 1.5 years to make it legal. Getting very excited about this parcel of parts arriving any day now.

Merc next in line to receive funding.

In other news.. My car storage sharing mate bought the red volvo 164 opposite the epping forest shop yesterday. We will be drooling over it and the merc at storage this weekend.

Great progress on all fronts! A multipronged effort is often required with these old toys.
