Lifting 107 - hoist type?

I recall other posts maybe for W109s which warned against using certain types of hoists to lift the car. Something to do with the front sub-frame being left behind iirc.

Anyway...does it matter if you lift an SLC using a hoist that supports the car by the chassis rails, or should you use a drive-over hoist that lifts the four wheels?

Oh, if it matters, I just want to check the driveline, gearbox mount, general suspension components. Not taking off the wheels (just yet).

W114 has the same subframe I believe, according to the manual no need for special support under subframe. There are metal discs under the bushes to prevent over stretching the bushes.

It is the earlier W110/111/112/108/109 cars that require a 4 post hoist.

If you want to work on the car in the future and you're considering buying a hoist, then a 2 post asymmetric hoist is bang-on.

if you're never going to do any gearbox, exhaust or subframe/suspension work, then a 4 poster will do. Jacking beams are a stop-gap measure which get in the way of the more serious 'work'.

front arms extend into the front chassis rails and on the rear, to the subframe bushes, or use the jacking points on all 4 corners, if you have a suitably stable jacking point and piece of high tensile steel (pitman arm bolts work)

The main thing about the 2 poster is the clear floor underneath, which is far more flexible for different vehicles.

Any suspension work is far easier with the 2 post hoist - be it dampers or springs or control arm bushes - whatever.

front subframe bushes - 2 poster.
rear diff mount? 2 poster.
wheel bearings? 2 poster.
exhaust? 2 poster.
steering box? 2 poster.
driveshafts? 2 poster.

It's just a lot easier with a 2 poster in a 107. but I'd say the same for my 201s, 124, the 126 was heavy and big on a 2 poster but still easy.

beats the heck out of the garage floor and 4 jack stands.

Buying a hoist isn't an option for me. I just needed to know for choosing a garage if I need to and am not near my mechanic. Eg checking for anything loose or damaged on my travels.

And believe it or not I haven't seen the underneath of my car yet. Also chasing a vibration and a clackety clack sound (which may be the brakes anti rattle spring/bracket, um, rattling) so thought it would be good to get it on a hoist and see things for myself.
