slc seat trim help/advice

Post by CraigB » Fri 26 May, 2017 3:00 pm

Lurches motor progressing again... slowly ... but got me thinking about sorting the trim.

First question - leather seat car, should it be redone in leather? We all know how easy to live with MB tex is and kits are available for less money, but just looking for opinions if leather makes a difference and maybe would affect future value.... slc was a very expensive car with best of everything and not budget mb tex?

Back seats could be salvagable - starting to put leatherique into top of back seat that has a small crack - chances are though after lots of effort it will still crack.

Last question - car has cloth headrests. Is this a quirky 70's style thing or have they been replaced at some stage from another car. Have a look at the photo.

Craig,
I can't see the headrests being original; if it's an SLC, why don't you go for velours? I would never change the velours in my SL, so much better than leather. If I could get it for my AMG, I'd ordered it.

Regards
Thomas

That's an interesting point and i believe was the most expensive option. I need a mind shift though having grown up in the 70's when cheap nasty velour was everywhere! I wore it, towels, was on furniture.... even on walls! But very period!

The headrest looks genuine as is "cut" the same as on my car and even has the correct seat belt plastic retaining hook. However, likely to have been replaced as I've never seen mismatched headrest and seat material.

Leather: deteriorates over time (no long term parking in direct sunlight), needs regular moisturising with cream. Good option for now, bad for the next owner.
MB-Tex: No maintenance and the next owner will appreciate your decision.
Velour: material can wear if a daily driver, very '70s period.

Thanks for that Chai, just the sort of feedback i was looking for. I was just thinking about restoring as is without thinking about it too much, and trying to save the back seats, when it crossed my mind how easy mb tex is to live with. I don't imagine it will do a heap of miles in my ownership, but you never know.

And that fabric in the headrests is very course - I can't imagine it being used on a seat face.

Those headrests came from David, Craig - Lurches leather ones had completely disintegrated internally and were covered in some kind of blue paint by the previous victorian owner.

I believe those came from a w123? unsure.

I liked the pattern of the fabric, and as there were lambswool covers on them for a while - it made no difference to them being different.

KHM in germany still make the fabric.

Fantastic, thanks for clearing that up Joe. So for you leather or mbtex?

I would just go for whatever you personally like (or are willing to afford). Whatever you spend is unlikely to be recouped, and worrying about a future owner's wishes, while very noble of you, is perhaps going too far.

MB tex is fantastic stuff, but the difference between it and leather is not going to be noticeable unless you keep the car for 25+ years.
Either of the 3 standard coverings would be fine, or you could go for tartan. This page has numerous examples, including a gullwing:

It was such a tough decision - but in the SLC I would go for Leather every time. In the SL, totally different story - I love leather, but MB-Tex is far and away more practical.

Lurch is yours now - So don't feel like you have to please me in any way shape or form - whatever you do I am enthusiastic about, because I know how well you treat your projects.

That cloth looks awesome though. Not sure if it's suitable for a 107, but I remember thinking, gosh that is a cool fabric - It had to be a 70's style, because all the 80's "karo" styles were all pretty horrid.

There was a w201 interior cloth called Rossi - and it was those splashes of random primary colours - a while back a full interior came up for sale on the 190rev FB page and I could nto believe anyone would have bought such a thing. but there you have it.... taste is a matter of one's personal preference!

I have seen that fabric on my dad's 80's 207D van, they used it on the seats and it was indestructible...

Could it be they reused headrests from a van?

The material was used as standard fabric in w123's - and those headrests came from David's (pastelgrey) w123 some years ago, so highly unlikely it would have come from a van, to a w123 then to the slc.

The fabric is actually really nice - I quite liked it - If I had a w123 with cloth interior, it would be the pattern of choice, definitely.
