450SL Oil & Coolant

Hello all.

Which engine oil viscosity is most suitable for an early 450SL? Also, is there a particularly well-suited brand for this model's engine?

20w50 I think. I've followed the school of thought that better to change oil than pay more for oil that lasts longer. Plenty of examples of long engine life just on normal oil. But might get some opposing opinions and from people who may know better than me. I've been getting 20l drums of Penrite on special from supercheap at a good price, but that might have been a promotional period.

Yes, I would second that. I use Penrite HPR 30 Mineral oil, my neighbour who was a mechanic and then worked for Penrite years ago swears by their products. I get mine from Repco. cheers

Hi,
you can be lucky to not ask that question in a German forum ... you would have around 100 posts in half a day ... here in the land of "I know better", there are two fractions: No 1 says "use the oil of those times" and No 2 says "Oil quality has developed, so use a high performance oil of today".

Of course both fractions are 100% sure, they're right. How do I do it? I put in "cheap" 10W40 and it works fine for the R107 and the W111 ...

Rather than start another thread, I hope to receive some more advice here, regarding which coolant is suitable for the above model (any particular colour?). If anyone shares their thoughts, it would be kindly appreciated.
