Obtaining a Datacard

Post by p_mcnamara »

I have been trying to track down the data card for my 1976 450SLC.
My local MB dealer had a crack and hit a dead end. So I had a go trying the various contacts from the forum (thank you all) complete with copies of rego papers, club membership and photos.
Unless I have got it completely wrong there appears to be a change of policy at Daimler? I came up with the following:
From datenkarten@daimler.com
"Dear Mr. McNamara,
Thank you for your interest in a vehicle data card for your Mercedes-Benz.
We thank you for your understanding that, effective immediately, we can
only offer this service via the Mercedes-Benz sales and service network.
The Mercedes-Benz company-owned sales and service outlets and subsidiaries
at home and abroad will supply data cards as before – particularly within
the scope of parts orders or repairs and maintenance work – but only to the
legal owner with proof of ownership.
Alternatively, we would also like to introduce you to the Mercedes-Benz
certificate, which presents the entire vehicle data from the data card in
the form of an attractive official document.
The certificate is available on proof of ownership (copy of the vehicle
registration papers, their equivalent or the purchase contract) at a price
of 100.00 EUR plus VAT and postage. The email address for orders is:
konzernarchiv@daimler.com
Please send proof of ownership as an attachment to your email. As the
certificate is prepared individually for you and requires a great deal of
additional research, please expect a delivery period of approximately eight
weeks.
Kind regards"
So I sent off a request (no money!) and then got this response interestingly from datenkarten (not kozernarchiv):
"Dear Mr. McNamara,
Thank you very much for your e-mail. Unfortunately we have to inform you that we supply data cards not to private persons, but only to Mercedes-Benz
sales branches and dealers. Please contact your local Mercedes-Benz sales branch or dealer (showing or submitting a proof or ownership, since the data card is supplied from our company to noone but the rightful owner of the vehicle), and we will supply the requested data card to them.
We hope for your understanding.
The certificate is no more available.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen/kind regards
Datenkarten-Team

So there you go! I would be interested to know if anyone has found a way around this?
Happy 50th to all the Pagodas this weekend in Canberra.

Can't see how it's worth 100 euro for an EPC datacard/ SA code printout.

anyway, you'd have thought by now that those uber-intelligent record keepers would have migrated all the microfiche info to computer or at the very least scanned it into digital format.

well it seems not to be the case. if it were it wouldnt take 8 weeks.

not sure why youd bother though. sometimes you can find datacards above the petrol tank behind the boot firewall panel. sometimes under the drivers seat.

these are places i have found datacards before. not just in the service logbook.

they are not really interesting unless you have a stackload of unusual or rare SA codes/options you need to verify as having been installed ex factory.
The rest you find on the radiator support panel. :read2:

Data cards are often tagged on the inside of rear seats

Well that's a shame, just a year or so ago I was able to get datacards for both my 67 Finnies. I wonder if they will make this available to club members or through the clublounge etc? I found a link that will give datacards the other day but it only works for cars from the early 80s on.

Mercedes Benz only stopped selling the certificate for 100 Euros

Normaly your dealer, how they wrote in the second mail, check your ownership and will send you the datacard in between 2 or 3 days for free.
That is the way how they do it normaly, if they are interested, if they want to do it, perhaps it will help if you want an offer for a new mercedes.
Or try another dealer
