230SL history

Postby GeeMerc » Sat 15 Apr, 2017 5:09 pm

Hi
I purchase a 1965 230SL from Sydney almost 2 years ago from a dealer. I have subsequently obtained the vehicles data card from the classic centre and the car was delivered to Australia (901)

I am in the process of restoring this vehicle. It is a bare metal restoration and last week it received its epoxy coat

I am trying to trace the history of this car and in particular which stealership placed the order with the factory in Germany. I have written to the classic centre in Germany but they unfortunately are unable to provide any additional information, apart from the data card.

I have sought information regarding the car history from AOMC but there was no additional information about the vehicle.

I found whilst searching the internet that someone from the Ford club Australia had written the following "Since I live in NSW I posted a letter to the Roads and Traffic Authority NSW (RTA). I requested the information
be supplied to myself in writing as specified under S17 of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act.
I requested:
1. The exact date (day) and original registration number of the car
2. Names and addresses of all past owners of this particular vehicle."

I am not sure if anyone has tried obtaining information through the RTA in NSW (I live in Victoria). Does anyone have any other suggestions as to where I could source further information regarding the history of this vehicle.

Thanks

Were there any books or receipts for past servicing? Cars like that often the guys servicing them will remember then and info about past owners. Failing that you could try calling dealers that have been around for a while or independents that will often keep records under the vin of the vehicle.

Craig
Unfortunately the car came without books including service booklet or receipts from previous servicing. I also tried searching the VIN numbers on Pagoda W113 website under car registry in case the previous owner had placed this information on that website. There are only a few W113 from Australia on that car registry. I wondered if Mercedes Benz Australia may still have a database containing the VIN number and dealers for cars delivered to Australia in the 1960's. Do you think it would be worth contacting Mercedes Benz? I bought the car from Sydney and transported it to Victoria. Alternatively I guess I could try the RTA in NSW as did the guy from the Ford club

Anything is worth a try. Not sure if i made my point clear. I wouldn't have faith in current MB Australia to keep records or care about cars from the past - would be great if they did. What i was referring to were dealers that have been in business for a long time or independent specialists who might just care. See if any of the Sydney guys know who you might chat to. There were never that many pagodas (well SA anyway from talking to the dealer) so some chance people remember the car.
