Asbestos containing materials

Post by MMWA »

What are the asbestos containing materials in the 109 series? in particular the 6.3

Are the engine gaskets made out of asbestos?

I have a mint pair of newly refreshed cylinder heads for the engine rebuild currently under way along with the original ones like swiss cheese and just noticed the old exhaust manifold gaskets sure as sh!t look like asbestos.

Is there anything else i should be worried about, such as cable sheathing or other insulation materials.

As discussed earlier I would say the brake pads are a good candidate even on later cars, and almost as hazardous is the fibreglass insulation lining the trans tunnel, front floor and lower firewall areas during removal.

The only people who worry about asbestos in the old style head gaskets are border force. You must have a very early 6.3 if it has copper asbestos sandwich gaskets though. They normally have the elring composite gaskets . If you sniff them you might get a dose of the meso ,so just use common sense when taking them off .

There could also be asbestos in the clutch plate, if you have a manual...
