280s exhaust manifold

Where are you? You can instantly see from my signature I'm in Adelaide. I have a number of spare manifolds but most important would be checking if those heated flaps are working correctly or maybe you can swap in from yours? What's wrong with yours?

That doesn't look good. I definitely have spares. If you were local i would say come around and choose etc. Its really just the time to pull apart or maybe its easier to send the whole think including inlet for you to play with, but then postage is a factor. If you want to leave it a day or so and see if you have any just around the corner and then i will have a look - need to go to my parts shed at a different location to home.

They have like a weight and circular spring (bi-metallic i guess) you can see on the outside of the manifold and a flap inside that starts off by letting the exhaust gas get up to the inlet manifold to warm it up quicker and then close off as it warms up. They are often seized up and i guess that is most likely in the open position, with the impact on performance that we all know about cold air intake meaning more gas/ denser air going in to go bang and better performance. In our warm climate i imagine if they give grief jamming them closed somehow would be a fair option.

It's really a pig of a job to get the exhaust connectors out of the manifold.

Start soaking them with your best penetrating oil. Make sure you order some new gaskets (MBspares will have them)
I spent more than a week every night squirting banging and heating.

In the end I cut one of the pipe, then they came off...

And ow, it's also a bit of a job to line up intake and exhaust manifold, after you replaced one. They are bolted together where the exhaust heats the intake.
If Craig has one, it's easier to replace both at once, if they have not been parted before...

Funnily enough, my Australian delivered finny does not have the counterweights...

That's interesting about the Oz finnie - maybe they worked out our climate didn't need it and just keep the air away from getting to the inlet.

Yes i was thinking a bit of extra freight could save hours of work! See how you go with a local source first.
