Star Shots! - Show us your Ride

Post by AMG » Mon 05 Mar, 2007 11:11 am

Post Pictures of your car here!

Don't forget to include details such as year, colour etc.
If your car has a story, for example; how you came across it, - put it in here with the pictures. It's always nice to read someone else's experiences.

If you've done any modifications / improvments, Here's the place to show them off - Post lots of pics!

It's not a bad idea to revisit your post every now and then, to make sure your pictures are still up. We'd also like to encourage those who do post a Project car, and supply us with updates, to come back to your original post and edit it, rather than make a new post each time, by replying. It will help keep all your pictures and progress in one spot!

It also makes your post MUCH easier to view.

If you're unsure on how to upload pictures, go to the posting tutorial on the main board and try the test posting page, Don't forget to sign yourself up for a free account on imageshack / photobucket etc.. if you haven't already.

Show us ya Pics! :)

This is a spare car of my dad's. So I'm using it a bit at the moment. It's a 300SE. It has been very well maintained and done just over 200k. Still drives beautifully, and interior is absolutley immac. Needs a little paintwork which as been caused by numerous road trips to Sydney whilst it was his main car. Therefore the bonnet and below the headlights needs re-painting, along with the bootlid where it had been keyed a few years ago. That should bring it back to as new condition. Not my favourite colour, but she is a nice old girl!

My new 500SEC, picked her up 2 weeks ago. 1988 model, 106,xxx kms, very good condition, everything works. The plates you see in the pics are gone now though, already transferred my custom plates from my 280CE over to this, will get more photos soon. The first thing i did to this car was go out and buy a K&N filter for 126 model to get some better breathing and at the same time bought a Zymol detail kit and some metal polish, detailed the car and polished the dull air cleaner into what you see in the pics

Hey Jeremy

Looks very nice.

You need to paint the plastic pieces of your headlight wipers silver again for a really clean look. Black grilles and smoked indicators also are easy mods.

Cheers

ARGH!

Can't say I'm a fan of the grill at all - star ON the bonnet or in the grill - NEVER both!

There's a C-Class near me that has both along with BLING BLING shiny shiny wheels - looks pretty tacky :(

Agreed. The 126 responds well to sublime bling. Understated and classy.

Gotta say, if you want the star in the grille, buy a convertible or an SLC.

or a G-Wagen if you can find one.

:)

Remove that grille star and you have 100% slam-dunk nice car. Trust me.

Well my 420SEL was origially intended to be a run about car nothing special, however when I found this one I couldn't believe the condition it was in and so he is my pride and joy. The "Governor" as he is affectionately known within the car club, managed to take the runners up trophy in the NSW Concour this year; so I was pretty hapy about that. It is a 1989 model and is a one owner car, Pearl Grey is the colour and yes it is original paint it has never been in an accident. The car has travelled 331,000km and is a credit to it's previous owner I have had it just over a year now and I doubt I will ever part with it cheers Mat :D

Sorry about this ordinary pic, can provide more if interested

From left to right;

Still own this '84 380SE in that silvery blue colour, with navy leather & sunroof etc.
I was looking for a low-budget W126 and got it a few years ago for $3k which I thought was a fair-enough price, despite the high mileage of 380,000 kms. A local car in decent mechanical condition and probably well maintained with about $9k of sometimes major receipts from the previous owner, including a fairly recent one of $5k+ @ 365,000 kms for reco heads, new valves, radiator, etc etc on the otherwise original engine. For a downmarket cheapie I think I bought it at about the right time in its life-cycle, after most of the typical W126 repairs had already been done and paid (by someone else!). For mention the transmission had previously been modified to enable 1st-gear starts

Since purchase it hasn't cost me too much, requiring new suspension spheres and a few odds and sods, plus I stupidly blew a water pump seal on a 42C day when doing a max-acceleration, max-rev demonstration with the A/C full on. I also had to get most of the exhaust replaced, with a good-quality sports system by Powertone in Canberra for a very reasonable $600, which gives it a nice V8 warble imo (there's no way I'm paying mega-dollars for the OE replacement on a $3k car, let alone $1,000 for ONE aftermarket muffler!) Other than that it's an enjoyable car to drive and own, has asked pleasingly little for its providence, age and mileage (now 435,000 km) and if required I would probably attempt a Darwin trip tomorrow. It still burns very little oil (half a litre every 6,000 km) with mpg typically ranging between 19~20 for urban use, to a best-ever of 24 hwy. All features and functions work well, mostly tidy and presentable including panel & paint but the usual blue dashpad cracks and average woodwork
_______________________________

My first Benz was this 'beautifully beige' 280S of 1970 vintage, with bone MB-Tex.
It's one of the ex-Austrian Embassy cars (non AU-spec) and originally black but apparently resprayed very early in its career, I guess when the diplomats figured out that black cars without A/C make little sense in aussie summers. I suspect this was the embassy car which IIRC was involved in a heavy, almost fatal crash with vague recollections of it perhaps being the Ambassador himself? There was/is another visually identical W108 knocking around the ACT, apparently also ex-embassy, maybe from an original batch of three?

Anyway, a four on the floor manual W108 which I snaffled in 2000 from a friend for a paltry $1500, with long rego and a fantastic motor and drivetrain. At vast expense he had the engine fully reconditioned (a superb job btw with pistons $200 each in 1996) although the suspension became a bit tired through my tenure. This was the Merc that switched me on to how solid, reliable and utterly dependable a good Benz could be, after too many years of too many local cars. I did plenty of highway miles in this car (about 150,000 kms) and it never once broke down or failed to start and always ran great, including cold-starts. I cannot remember ever adding oil to it, the temp gauge never budged more than a few microns from horizontal even in 42C heatwave conditions and the oil pressure always pegged @ 80 psi even when hot-idling in such weather, until an oil change was due. Most maintenance parts were priced comparably to local cars and service costs were likewise minimal

Loved the charismatic motor and its angry urgent snarl as it headed towards 6,300 rpm, a great 6 cyl sporty soundtrack. These engines feel like they could last forever. Also liked the very well designed oil-bath aircleaner, and excellent ground clearance, and of course that smooth Mercedes ride. Not to forget that gorgeous view of the bonnet draped over the motor, inspired styling and fantastic all-round vision. My first experience of the dreaded M-B manual shift, a precise albeit clunky action and 'unusual' ratios which I nevertheless enjoyed (with amazingly strong syncro) although I can see why many favour the automatic version. John Green supplied a cheap set of wider W126 V8 steel rims (with the nifty internal turbine brake-vents) which I had powder-coated, they greatly improved the roadholding and stance. Fuel economy was about 20~22 mpg so I had it converted to mono-LPG by GasResearch themselves, to good effect and sensationally cheap to run, although sadly the motor did lose its sporty high-rev zing. But all in all it proved to be a terrifically effective car and I was very sorry to see it go

At right my wife's 280SE (since sold) also an '84 W126 featuring a mildly charcoal silver and attractive mid-tan MB-Tex.
She had just experienced her third high-speed kangaroo hit in 12 months, resulting in two write-offs and another extensively damaged. So the choice was obvious, a cheap safe old S-Class! This one preceded my 380SE, was acquired for $2k and from memory it had done about 230,000 kms, sold when a bit over 300,000? Amusingly we managed to get it insured for an agreed-value of $7,000 (!) and I was almost praying for another roo encounter ...

Had to spend a bit on various mechanicals to get it up to an acceptable standard, but once there it too provided dependable and of course comfortable transport, again with that sensational Mercedes ride and very sure highway handling. Extremely powerful brakes like all Mercs I've driven or owned. Although a bit underpowered in the W126, the M110 six was a strong and very likeable engine that loved to rev and she really hammered this old twincam on her daily 130 km highway commute, usually achieving between 17 ~ 19 mpg. This car also started from stationary in 1st gear, and, like with all the above cars, we had to upgrade the headlight globes from the disappointingly mediocre originals. Sunroof-equipped but non-functional airco, a few scratches and scrapes, tired steering box and dubious transmission. Btw it was a lot of fun for us to concurrently own two virtually identical (at least visually) W126s, and you can imagine the potential for playing out stunts and pranks 8)

Haven't named him yet. It's definitely a boy.
Nat was thinking of calling him Selwyn. I think it's a play on letters. salubrious might have been equally tacky for an adjective, though apt in description, is not quite as correctly lettered.

for the moment the nickname is land-barge. it certainly sails around corners - definitely not nimble like stella, but stately and comfortable. exactly what the doctor ordered. :)

Wow.

Can I ask what you paid? Curious what these things are worth. I see them advertised from anywehre between $5,000 and $30,000.

Paid 3,600 US for mine but she needed a ton of work but a top car with low mileage here usually goes for 8,000 or so. Put shipping costs on that and you could have a really nice one for about 12,000 to 15,000

Another very nice example (yessssss, the 126'rs are slowly taking over....).

Have you considered giving the Leatherique products a go on your interior?

I have used them with some spectacular results, their dyes are very good and hard wearing and their leather conditioners put all the others to shame.

unfortunately the cracks in the leather are quite severe. quite open so i dont know that it will fix them but hey um up for anything to make her look better. I was going to just replace the fronts, but having said that the backs would look really bad after replacing just the fronts. But the interior is way down the list for now, I am doing the idler arm tomorrow and the shifter linkage bushings as they have gone and the idler arm is squeaking so badly that people look at me we I'm turning the corner. Took a while to find it and had to have the wife wiggle the steering while I was under the car looking for the noise. Thankfully this is an easy repair, as is the linkage bushings and there quite cheap even from the stealership. 5.00 A piece. Got original idler arm bushings of ebay, for 40.00, merc wanted 80 for them.

Have a look at the Leatherique site, there are some pretty amazing stories and examples there, and their stuff does work!

I have not had to fill major cracks or anything but the standard wear patch on the drivers seat has gone and the leather is soft and supple again after using their stuff.

Even if it just extends the life of what you have in there before getting it replaced.

I wish I had shares in their company!!

Hi USA

Have you an explanation while the US will not accept "Euro" style headlights on Benz's and insist on the units installed there?

I see from other U.S. Benz sites that some U.S. Benz owners get after market Euro style head lights fitted for aesthetic reasons- apparently in contravention of the laws.

Actually I dont...... cant see why there would be a problem other than some stupid government rule that tried to put a spanner in the works for foreign car importers. More than likely it was something to do with frontal impact safety guru not know his a-hole from a hole in the ground.

heres an explanation i grabbed from Benzworld forum explaining the rule and its pretty much what i thought

What are "Euro" lights? Where can I get them?[/*]

Euro lights reffer to the H4 bulb headlights that were originally found on NON-US market w126's. At the time, the US had a law(now defunct since 1992)that required US market cars to have sealed beams.

The Euro lights offer better lighting primarily due to the beam pattern on the glass lens. They offer a near feature which allows you to adjust the height from the interior using an adjustment knob by the headlight switch. However, this feature only works if all parts from a Euro car or purchased separately are retrofitted into the US version car.

Not only do you get better lighting, these light assemblies look 10 times better than the plastic framed US headlights.

The original Euro lights are made by Bosch(made in Germany). There are several aftermarket companies that still make "Euro" lights, such as TYC and DEPO(both made in Taiwan), but in my oppinion the quality is not as good as the orignals. The positive side is that these aftermarket lights are priced considerably less new than the original Bosch units.
hope this answers your question

its amazing to see what people will pay for what items.... e.g aftermarket (taiwanese) headlights run around 300.00US a set. Ebay UK can get originals for 20.00pounds about 40 us dollars plus shipping. Granted there not new but there original equipment. lots of taiwanese copies of just about everything MB here in the states. I'm having the whole setup for headlights shipped from the UK and i paid 40 pounds for lights and shipping.

Ark,
It came in at a very respectable mid-teen figure.

There is nothing requiring any special attention.

Everything works well. it's quiet and makes no noises.
Cruise switch is being replaced, and the a/c climate control porcupine/thermometer/bimetallic switch thingamajig.

and that's it.

Swapping wheels from Stella over, because mine are in better condition, and the simmons will go on the SL. maybe.

have the tailights ready to go on, but the smoked corners haven't arrived yet. Soon as they do, it's all done.

Nice interior colour, too.

Can I drag off topic for a minute - what's the story with the net pockets behind the seats vs the leather ones?

I've got leather pockets.

I don't know, does your SEL have leather?

this particular car has leather plus electrics, incl reclining rear seat etc, so I don't know if there is a particular difference between models - it would appear not, or if it was a 'date' when the use was changed.
maybe you have an 'update' model?

Nets on the back were just a cheaper option.... you could have leather seats with net backs..... you could get leather seats with leather backs.... adjustable head rests, heated seats, full electric adjustability and then there was also the velour option on the seats, very desirable here in the states as it is a high quality velour not your usual crap on jap runabouts. There was also many a different option on the pattern of the seats through the years. you could get pleats or the ventilated style like mine. Just different spec levels.

Correction, nets on the back of the seats was the first gen interior, full leather was the second gen interior with changes to the way the seat and doors were trimmed also.

Where it gets confusing is between the 1st and 2nd gen mechanical changeover which occurred before the trim changeover (have I lost you yet?).

So the gen 1/2 thing is recognised as mechanically happening in 86, but the interior happened in 88.

In fact, bobl who also has a 420 SE production date Nov 87 has the old interior and I with a production date of April 88 have the new interior.

Other tell tale signs are the 'stripes' in the leather on the doors (2nd) and the seats don't have all the pleats that the fist ones have.
