Very nice, now there is a 380 wrecking up here with a set of period correct bundt alloys on which I can have a look at for you next week if you are interested.

Not sure if the seller wants to part with them however...

Zebrano vs Burl Walnut....

anyone?

I've been out of the country a total of 4 days and already I am pining for a nice mercedes to drive/be driven in.

These little cars are scary. as is the traffic flow.

Interesting question Joe, from my experience the Zebrano, whilst the cheaper wood grain, has appeared to weather better over the years.

From the cars I have looked at, the burl walnut often has cracked lacquer, whether this was the lacquer used by MB, the number of cars with walnut which have subsequently been abused or what, I don't know.

Do I have statistical evidence to back this up? Nup, just what has struck me as an observation....

looking at the zebrano on mine which has cracked badly on just about every piece i would have to assume that it is more to do with the thickness of the laquer. mine is probably close to 1.5 millimetres thick which in the eighties was rather a lot of laquer. in those days the quality of laquers available anywhere is not whats available now. Put this in direct contact sunlight and cracking will start rather quickly. I would put it at more Zebrano models being abused with sunlight and un-garaged than to the wood itself

Hi all
heres my 300 SE finally back on the road after front brake re build.
i brought it in feb 07 have done 25 000 since then . My car was born in feb 86, astral silver with grey M-B tex has done 413 500 kms . every thing works except the hirschman antenna but i have a replacement hirschman.
i have added the wheels which are lorinser 16 *8 inch with federal 225 50 r16 which are a really good tire but looks like i will only get about 20 000 kms out of them (grip v wear).
i have installed koni adjustable special d shocks in the front the rear is sls which works well.
the Bosch lights are not the neatest addition :( but it keeps roo's off the bonnet.
the front brakes are drilled and slotted rotors apart from that it is mech stock.
and thats the way it will stay :D
look forward to catching up with other oz benz members on the 2nd in Melbourne.

The one thing I must say I like about Mercedes, is the ability to easily read the gauges.
Saab are another marque that also do this well, though not as tastefully.
However, the prize award for the best Tachometer placement is awarded to the other Stuttgart stormer... the 'real' 911.

unfortunately, the trip computer robs those of us who love huge spinning needles of our derived pleasure.
Interesting for those who haven't looked closely, the digital clock instead of our lil analogue one, and the tiny tacho up the top.

I note also your speedo gauge only reads to 240km/h. Most interesting.
I once had a '90 BMW 325 pegged to that number along the pac hwy for about 15 mins.

It was hard to me to understand what is on the computer display because I do not have the description manual how to use that Tripcomputer ...but I learn it by intuition...It is very usefull...I like it so much!
The specification top speed of my car is 235 km/h because it has the catalytic converter...I try it up to 210 km/h on highway...

I manage to make those pictures smaller.

hi guys...

82 380SE, from south africa. full engine rebuild 100,000kms ago...still goes fairly well!! put it on the g-tech the other night for a bit of fun... ;) a little rough around the edges at the moment but i have some plans (after fixing things)

to fix:
stalling in hot weather/k-jet issue
some interior trims need fixing
fix water leaks around windscreen
fix heater hose
fix driver's seat that makes you fall into the door
new bonnet badge
get rid of the little reflector things

the plans:
old-school lorinser rims (deep dish yes please)
clear indicators
*maybe* subtle amg kit
exhaust (tasteful note, not fart cannon)
extractors (if exist)
maybe a friends haltech aftermarket computer??

cheers mate! its done 330,000kms... not too bad for it's age...

except for today, pulled all around the lower windscreen to bits- gigantic rust holes. water seeps into footwells... so i tried to stop the rust and divert the water, but alas, it will not fix the problem...

i was also wondering, since the engine has had a rebuild, is there any chance they could have used other m116 or even m117 bits? because it goes very well... much better than the 380 was quoted from the factory... 0-100 in approx 7.5-8 seconds..

thanks heaps!

Without Cats or o2 sensor, it'll have a more aggressive sound. If it has been worked on, it may have a significant performance increase over a standard 380, but not enough to tear away from the lights in tyresmoke.

Check your Engine number. it may be a replacement engine, and not of the same nominal swept volume as the rear badge indicates.

cheers guys! yeah it's certainly no tyre-smoker... but i'll suss out the engine number and reciepts of what engine work was done... but it does move a fair bit better than expected for a 1600kg car!

Edit: Got the engine number, 116 912 201 7077... So sounds like it's a 380! Must just be the lack of O2 sensors and cats etc etc.

Aiee!

Hey what colour's your interior? Considering your car used to be that dark red colour I'm curious

Given it's a coupe, I don't have an issue with pulling the SLS and doing the lowered+Bilstein job. I remember when I put in the fully adjustable (from the cabin) swaybars in the brockodore, plus the bilsteins and linear rate springs over a decade a go - It was a magic transformation, and hardly detracted from the ride quality at all, but at the lower speeds (<60) it did suffer from a tiny amount of tramlining (camber/caster spec) and a slightly harsh ride, due to the spring rate and the tremendously stiff bilstein dampers (VN group A race spec). Remember this was in a VH SS Group 3, so it didn't have mercedes' chassis refinement. It did make the car brilliant around corners though. I never had anything on the road come anywhere near it in terms of cornering ability. But we are essentially talking about a street-registered race car with an interior, which is not what a 126 is, and therefore I have chosen not to do things I would normally consider, such as urethane bushes, swaybars, springs dampers brakes wheels/tyres etc.

it's all about the 'package' right? If it looks good, goes well, handles like it's on rails and is comfortable to boot - then it's a winner. I'm pretty sure a 500 coupe fits that mould.

I'm just hoping the 107 roadster is going to 'respond favourably' to the same ideas....

New Pics.
Picked up the car on Friday evening, wow- what a difference an Ace spannerman makes.
a Quick clean & a couple of pics b4 it rained:

I simply cannot describe how much better the car is now - it is so quiet, and soaked up the bumpy highway trip like a hovercraft. 8)

Sadly, Schultz is no longer with us. You may have read that in another thread.

I guess I should look for some more pics that I have around.

Yes indeed.
- Named after the Character 'Schultz' in Hogan's Heroes, for none other than the obvious reason that the car is a greycoat (anthracite) and the fact that the 560sel just lopes along idly along the highways - unassuming, and dutiful, very much like its' character's namesake.

This particular car had a very solid feel, and it was eerily silent on the road. you really had to give it some stick to hear the engine, and then it was only the induction roar from the cold air intake that you could hear ever so slightly through the firewall. It's going to be very difficult to find a replacement, after (perhaps being the lucky, or not-so lucky custodian) owning a clean example.

The weirdest thing is that I've owned cars (obviously!) and had accidents before, but I never actually developed a 'bond' or an acute fondness for any of the vehicles I've owned prior to Schultz. Even Stella has a different (tempremental) personality. As weird as it sounds, this particular car, just wove some sort of magic.

Hey Meras_280se,

All I can say is have fun with fitting 22's on the car when you lower it. fitting 20's on there are as much as you can go without your tyre rubbing against your upper suspension joint ive got a gap about 10mm from the tyre to the joint. As far as i know there is only 2 W126's with 22 inch wheels in the world, and they are both in america...If you pull it off, please let me know asap, as i wouldnt mind squeezing bigger wheels under my arches...hehe Oh...and say goodbye to the lovely mercedes ride, low profile tyres kill the ride.

BTW, my 380SEL is the same exact colour interior/exterior wise. Looks good!
