No photo shopping done to this. Mine is the 300SEL (Zeppelin) and the other is a 560SEL (OTOPRUV) aka zero to proove.

Enjoy.

Having seen Steve's 300SEL for the first time at the Alpine Classic, I can state that it is a very clean, tidy and original example (except for the chrome wheel arches which Steve has already learned are a pet hate of mine :P ). You only need look at how clean it is in the engine bay to realise how good this 126 is. The old 220S was great at Oran Park. For those who missed it, there's a link to Steve's in-car video at viewtopic.php?f=13&t=8685#p55076

The newer springs were fitted recently. For those that have dislike for chrome wheel arch moulds, you know who you are, look away now.

I finally received my W124, slighly smaller steering wheel, and I installed it on Saturday. I'll post the pictures and the expalain my one man procedure and the tools I used. Just got to find the time to get the camera out. Someone will get a chuckle out of this.

Found a couple of minutes for photos today so long promised SEC and those with a sharp eye will see the front spoiler is on now and the ex shane Pentas which I reckon really set it off. And also the new 560 SEL. You will notice the rear guard swipe that will be fixed and the door panels have peeled off paint in places also front bumper. I think I will get all those done in 2 pac with the flex agent in it (so it doesn't stone chip) like the SEC spoiler I had done. Also a slight dent in the bonnet is visible but apart from that it cleaned up pretty good I think. I was thinking of fitting the 16 x 8 hammers visible in the early SEC shots when I picked it up, body kit maybe.... but right now it looks just right as is to me!

Here's my 1985 380
my 380 1.JPG
my 380 2.JPG
It's changed a bit while I've had it and I'm currently fitting a second generation body kit that I've cobbled together from around the place. I'm not sure what colour I want it just yet, either the two-tone light blue (as the front and rear bar are now) or grey.

I've also stripped the K-Jet and in the final stages of tuning MegaSquirt, and it runs well, no more hot starting problems - although I'm constantly refining it. Next is setting up the ECU controlled spark with the ford EDIS module that should release a bit of extra power.

The interior I had originally was a bit far gone in the front, so I salvaged a decent '87 model one (unfortunately old style) from the wreckers. I also used the Leatherique leather rejuvenation and dye system, but turned out the wrong colour :( So I'm working my way though with the proper colour.

I bought the car from an independent Mercedes garage here in Sydney as a temporary car when I had my Supra crashed into while I was at work, I wasn't quite sure if it would be a write-off or not. Of course I didn't really care too much about the condition at the time (again much has changed!) and just wanted a big car since I was moving houses and needed to get to work each day. I had a week of public transport and that was enough! The car was a courtesy car for some of the mechanic's customers, but met an end to that role when one of them kept driving with an overheated engine. The engine bay was and entire car was stripped for respray and the heads replaced and reinstalled. The car was used by the guy as a get around car then, and the last time he lent it to somebody, they put a ding in the driver's door. When I first bought it, the SLS system sagged badly it was the pump, but got that fixed for a couple of hundred before I left with it. The interior was really dirty but rear seats ok. The paintwork had been recently re-sprayed and is pretty good except some clear coat For King and country on the roof gutter ridges. When I changed the oil I made a disturbing discovery, the oil filter had imploded and looked really bad. They had forgotten to do a proper oil change for a long time. They use Mobil 1 in the shop, so that was the only positive there. I think the car was run in and out of the shop each day, which I'm guessing is pretty bad for a car.

I over the time I've had the car, it's come up pretty well really, the only problem is that I'm constantly pulling it to bits!

My family comes from the country and has always had a Mercedes somewhere, and would keep them for a long time. I've always liked them, my grandfather bought a new W116 280SEL back in the day, off the showroom floor (in Dubbo I think) when living in Cobar of all places! Eventually they downsized to a 190E and my grandmother has just given up driving at 83, but the car is in perfect shape. My parents have an M-Class that they've has since '98 and has never giving them any problems but for the terrible dealer servicing mistakes that have included forgetting to fill with oil, no trans fluid, frying the computer, etc. They now get it serviced in Sydney when they are down. My uncle has a W203 C320, and although covered in red dust and sticking his blue heeler in it, goes pretty well.

I'm just about to replace the front shocks, ball joints and some of the suspension bushes and the special MB spring compressor just turned up today!

I guess I have thrown a bit of cashola at the car, but It's really been a learning project car, I now understand exactly how engines operate, engine management, fuel injection design, problem diagnosis, brake work, repair and general mechanical work & important maitenence. Plus it helps satiate my need to dismantle things to figure out how everything works! The MegaSquirt has been a bit of a saga, it started when I was suffering from hot start issues and idle roughness and really bad fuel consumption. After a lot of fiddling I thought it would be a cool idea. I've had some trouble fitting and sealing the electronic injectors and rails but it's all a learning lesson! I'm feeling pretty confident about it now great now. Previously, I was having problems with idle roughness since the injector seals were not sealing right, and each cylinder would be having the wrong mix when the throttle was closed. No wonder it was impossible to get it to idle smoothly! I'm a little worried that the piston rings are no good in cyl 1 & 4, since a leakdown showed 33% leakage in each, although compression was reportedly ok in a previous test. The vacuum gauge when put in gear always drops to about half-way from park/neutral, but I'll see if tuning the idle mix will help. Now that the engine cylinders are all getting the same amount of air it should be much easier to tune.

Here's a shot of the engine when I first installed EFI without the air cleaner:
eng1.jpg

I really love the car, and it is very satisfying and comfortable to drive, unlike the supra which does not agree with Sydney roads at all. What I would like to do is find a beautiful series 2 tan interior, I really feel it will make all the difference. There are some amazingly well kept cars in the UK for very little, and probably a lot of rusted ones with ok interiors. I'm guessing you could somehow get the parts over?

Stuff done so far (in order):

Bought car about Nov 08 - odo not working at 260,000kms ~$3500 I think
SLS pump repair (when I picked the car up)
Fixed odo - makes annoying ticking sound now!
New style 15 hole wheels
Leather bound slightly smaller diameter steering wheel (from 560 I think)
New seats
New injector seals and air distribution hoses
New burl walnut dash fascia
re-dyed seats & stripped and washed carpet
Built Megasquirt ECU, harness & made up new fuel system
Brake replacement
Sourced Gen 2 bumpers (need some paint)
Re-fitted injector rails - much smoother engine now.

So that's my rant about my car for now.

I really do not know that! I only know that my car was originally "authorities sales". I have found in the car traces of telephone and radio sets, siren...

The truth is that when I have passanger in the backseats it is hard to see from outside, looking from the sides of the car! I asume that we can call it privacy glass! 8)

One friend of mine, fellow W126 owner want to buy for his car some rear lamps just like yours...

Can you tell me where did you find them and what was the cost ?
He is looking for a while but he did not find anything simillar with that you have. Eighter they are too black or they are just not good quality.

I just realised that I haven't posted our 560SEL.

It's beginning to look good and I'm slowly working through a number of smaller jobs. Big job to do is work out what needs to be done to the gearbox now that reverse will not engage - bit of a wallet bash coming up.

That said, we love the car and it's a keeper.

Chop with AMG wheels and minor lowering:

Image

New 500SEC. Smoke silver. Pretty much immaculate, 160,000km, full service history, fresh timing chain etc etc.

HK-Spec, 10:1 KAT version, 185kW. As far as I've read the only difference between the 10:1 RUF and 10:1 Kat is the Catalytic converter, so may add a very subtle exhaust to get that extra 10kW and bit better fuel economy.

Once the Michelins on the 15" wheels are no good I'll swap the 17" AMGs on, as they need new tyres anyway. Probably go for Euro plates too, and maybe smoked/clear blinkers...

Maybe lower a wee bit and that will do. Just loving the car atm, needs no work bar a rear window switch and some very minor fiddling.

Thanks again to Greg in Oz and KimB who inspected the car for me, I owe you both a drink!!

Hi Ryley,

I was scrolling down through your photos thinking how I drove one that looked exactly like that (apart from the rego plates) recently!

I was wondering just the other day if you had taken delivery of it yet. I hope it is everything you expected it to be. Look after it as I believe it is a nice example.

Cheers,
Greg

Thanks Steven.

If that Monaro wasn't in your pic it would look like an classic 80's photo of an AMG mod SEC.

Hi guys have finally taken the plunge and purchased a 1990 420SEL Anthracite Grey with cream interior. Alloys are a bit sad but I am looking to change those, so I might pester some of you for the brand etc of you wheels. I am attaching some pics hopefully they will load.

Cheers

Here are some photos of my 500SEC with the new wheels and springs:

With AMGs, 235/45/17 fronts, 275/40/17 rears

Image

Mit H&R Springs, standard dampers… Front came down 2.5" and the rear 1". Using original 2 nub pads front, 3 nub rear.

Just needs that 2.25" twin exhaust now… Going with 2 straight through mufflers to keep it fairly quiet until using the loud pedal…..

That's a very noice 420se Carina. What is the white thing on the back passenger shelf or is it a light reflection?

Also Kim, is your white 500sec an ex Honkers car? If so, what condition was it in when you bought it? Reason I ask is that I'm going to look at an ex Honkers 500sec this week. Trouble is there are no service books with it!

I bought it in mid 2009 from Nambour QLD and had it trucked over. It needed repainting but was a late 1987 high comp version with all the power option fruit and no pollution gear fitted (ECE version, alloy trailing arms etc) which was important to me. The private seller was a Merc nut and had too many and was downsizing due to GFC and did comment on how it was a lot more powerful than other versions he had driven which sparked my interest. At that time most 500SEC's on the market were Gen 1's and the Aust sold 560's were very pricey (>$25k)
I dont think SEC's out of HK would have had the same life as an SE/SEL which would have carted a lot a business people around for the comfort/prestige. An SEC would have been more the sunday driver car to show off in.
