OK Everyone...sit up straight in your desks and pay attention! A short lecture on the 1991 560SEL! Feel free to comment.

This car has a "Snowchain Mode" button! Interesting!

Paraphrasing Doug DeM.

Defining the latest Mercedes is by checking the latest gadgets it has. Defining the '91 560SEL is checking the quality.

Doug's reviews - as he mentions - are biased towards the latest 2017+ specifications.

As regards the snow chain button, I vaguely remember the same button in the 560SEL I once owned and being mystified by it.

Also he mentions RRP prices for a 560SEL in the U.S. - $US 70,000 - the same car here was AU$212.000 - pourquoi :dontknow:

This is the guy that stated the W140 was the best S Class from W116 to current.

He really did not do his homework well before talking about its features.
The US spec version he demonstrated is the lower compression 9.2 engine with that horrible over the bellhousing exhaust crossover fed into those over-kill series of cats required to meet US emission regs and i bet they are still the original clogged up 25 year old cats on there impacting severely that cars engine performance.

Another thing that really surprised me when i imported a Gen2 rear AMG Euro rear bumper complete (AMG skirt & euro bumper all still joined as one piece as they were glued together)
is it had the required heavy duty steel bar that runs across the entire length of the inside of the bumper (US Regs required it be fitted to all imports back then -same deal with their headlights) and you would not believe how HEAVY it made both the rear and the front bumper.
The rear bumper weighs so much that one person cannot lift the bumper unless your are really strong - they are like ship anchors x 2 adding tremendous weight to the car - it blew me away compared to our Euro version which are super light.

He did not have a clue about 1st gear start (selecting 1st and shifter across to the right to engage 1st if you wanted a fast start off the lights) and no idea about ASR traction control fitted to a lot of US models for snow conditions in their winter

They fitted that ignition buzzer to US models for seat belt warning as they knew US owners back then had a habit of not wearing their seat belts and no doubt would persue legal action otherwise if in an accident and blame Mercedes for not warning them. I believe if you fit your drivers belt and have your foot on the brake before start up it does not buzz.

The headlight wipers and washer jets only come on if the headlights are on and your activate the windscreen wipers and washer jets.

Worst thing about that guy as he is such an annoying presenter with his voice and manner - he talks so fast in his high pitch he does not have time to take a breath and just rattles on machine gun style it really puts you off watching any of his vids. He also edits them so the talking jumps from one sentence direct to another with no pause - so painful to listen to

I can't disagree with the comments so far.

The W140 the best S class ever? Hmmmm!

Agree West Coast Kim.....his presentation style leaves a lot to be desired. I had to grit my teeth to finish watching to the end of the vid. :angryfire:

You would think that for someone who wants to review one of the best cars built by Mercedes, he would ask a few questions about the features before going in front of the camera and showing his ignorance. :snooty:

Anyway, potential W126 Nutters, don't be put off by the reviewer's comments. That 560SEL is one mean machine with beauty to match! Just my usual unbiased opinion of course!

Apart from :
Disentargrating eiring harness
Failing door closing pumps
Garanteed to fail AC eveporator
Brake switch problems
ASR issues

The W140 was a fantastic car.

The Maybach was based on the W140 chassis.

The W220 - IMHO - is an underwhelming car.

Doug deM’s major problem is trying to compare 10, 15, 20, 25, and more then 30 year old cars to contemporary iCars.

I have the snowchain button on my 420SE, I always assumed it disabled or retarded ASR function.

US spec cars were certainly chocked, they had two cats over our one. Fuel was routed differently and exhaust was restricted. If that wasn't enough fuel distributor was adjusted on lean side to provide the appearance of better fuel economy,

Here you go on that snow chain button function-
Newly optional on all 126s for 1991 was “ASR” Automatic Slip Control.
ASR measures variations in rotational speed between rear drive wheels and front wheels. When one or both rear drive wheels start slipping and spinning faster, the ASR system applies braking power to the specific wheel or wheels to reduce spin.
If brake application doesn’t restore traction, a computer automatically reduces engine power by means of electronic throttle control.

Models with ASR all feature a button on the center console with a snow tire design on it.
This button serves not to turn ASR off completely, but to allow for extra wheel slippage if tire chains are equipped in severe climate areas.

I wish we had the snow chain feature on our 2 W126 Benzes!

We get snowed in regularly here on Sydney's Northern Beaches! :laughing6:

I've got a feeling ASR was available as an option in Europe from around 87-88, but MB Australia didn't offer it until the last of the W126's.

My 420SE has a build date of Feb 1990 and is optioned with it.

Need someone with some more knowledge to confirm.
