Lowering the 420SEL

Post by 420.SELect » Wed 10 Jan, 2018 10:51 pm

Hi Guys,

I am looking into lowering my 420SEL and would appreciate some advice.

Firstly, Springs - Most of the posts I have read recommend, and have installed, H&R Sport Springs (the SLS option, as I believe my '88 420SEL has SLS) so I'm pretty confident that this choice is a no brainer. However, the number of nubs seems to be up to personal preference or enough for safe operation.

Next, Shocks - Should I upgrade the current shocks?
If so, should I go with Bilstien B4s or B8s, or even Koni's? Some posts say stick with the comforts and others recommend the B8's.

Lastly, hub-centric spacers - The posts I have read mention that wheel spacers - especially for the rear - make the look a bit more complete.
I don't think my front ones will need them but I think the rear, based on the comments of other who have done the same, could do with 15-20mm.
If I was go go down this path, I have read that extended lugs are required. Suggestions on which ones would be suitable would be appreciated.

As for the rims, I have a set of 14" BBS Mahle. I know a lot of people have/prefer the mono-blocks but I like the style of these.
Different folks, different strokes.

My gut feeling is if the shocks feel fine to you now, they will also work fine with the new springs. Don't think i can add anything else.

Do your 14" BBS fit over your front brake calipers? Gen 1 14 inch wheels won't fit over the bigger calipers and discs on your gen 2 420, so was just curious that they have that extra clearance. I like the BBS too and apparently what was first fitted on my 500SEC AMG, except in 16 x 8

Hi Craig.

Yeah I think the shocks feel fine at the moment.
Might just chuck the new springs on and go from there.

As for the clearance concern, the BBS’s are currently on so I assume I am okay.
When I chuck the new springs in I will have a look a see what the clearance looks like.
