w126 v8 starter replacement

Post by CraigB » Wed 22 Nov, 2017 8:59 am

Couldn't find anything in a search of this issue here. Found lots of info on other forums but thought i would put my consensus here as to what i did. This is on my 560SEL.

My big question though is, does anyone know any tricks with getting the solenoid wire back on. Tiny little screw (not a spade fitting that companies like landrover and morris decided was a better way to go than a tiny screw back in the 1950's) in the most inaccessible place - completely out of view up against the block and not even on the same plane as the bigger terminals but tucked further back. If all else fails i guess i can convert it to spade fitting but somewhere in my mind is that they must have had a reason to do something that is such a monumental PITA!

I just used a hex bit on the end of a 40cm or so breaker bar into the bolts on the bell housing - not the major drama you hear about with extensions and unis. And i am just working with a trolley jack under front suspension and axle stands under body. Then getting it out - I didn't remove any steering arms etc - just turned steering wheel hard left and there is a hole it just fits through over the idler and steering arm.

Job will be done as soon as i work out how to get this bloody screw in! And i don't have big hands either.

Can you put the screw head into a length of plastic or rubber tube and use it like aflexible extension ?

Im quite sure the last time I did mine I connected both cables before positioning the starter in to its final location - I think it was for this very reason.

Push the gear end of the starter up toward the bonnet, connect the cables while the front side is pointing downwards then drop back into the hole in the bell housing.

For a full recovery, think of someone working on a DS or R16 :laughing6:

Or XJS-V12 :laughing5:

Starter is in and working. I tried Dean's method first and you can poke the nose up a bit, but my skinny arms not able to suspend and hold a tiny screw etc. So along the same lines i perched it there with gear end up so I could see where the screw was to go and undid the starter cable clamps, pulled it down so i could more easily attach and then bolted it all back again. Could have been avoided with the simple use of a spade fitting!

Thanks for the advice .
