560 exhaust cat? Anyone with access to EPC

Post by chucke » Mon 07 Aug, 2017 11:42 pm

Hi there

I'm looking at getting new exhaust for my 560 and wondered if anyone with access to EPC could tell me if mine came from factory with cat? It's HK delivered

Yours is a HK delivered 300hp Euro with Tri-Ys and never came with Cats.
Just Kidney's and the large factory rear muffler with twin 2" pipes all the way.
I just ditched two sets of factory systems off mine when the custom s/s in 2/25" were installed on both the coupe & SEL.
Your current system underneath is a custom job anyway (not factory) by the previous owner

Here in WA even if your car never came with one and was made after 1986 most exhaust shops will flat out refuse not to install one.

That was the case with the blue 560 you have now kim, the previous owner ended up having to get a second hand complete exhaust off another dirty euro because no one wanted to work on it without adding a cat. You were lucky the same BS was not pulled on you when you had your custom one made up.

From the text book
In September 1985, two newly constructed six-cylinder SOHC engines, M103 (already used in the new mid-sized Mercedes-Benz W124 series), replaced the 2.8-litre DOHC M110 engines. The carburetted version was replaced by a 2.6-litre fuel injection engine, while the 3.0-litre version replaced the fuel injected M110. Also new was a 4.2-litre V8 engine, designed to replace the 3.8-litre version used in the W126 sedans, coupés, and the SL-Class. The 5.0-litre engine was modified to receive electronic ignition and electronic-mechanical fuel injection in form of the Bosch KE-jetronic system. Performance was increased to 245 hp (183 kW). An ECE version of the 5.0-litre M117 V8 engine was also available from September 1987 with a power output of 265 hp (198 kW)

The largest new engine was the 5.5-litre V8 that was a further development from the 5-litre version. An increased stroke resulted in an increased peak horsepower output of 272 hp (203 kW). There was a higher compression version available, if required, that produced 300 hp (220 kW). This version was only available without catalytic converter. But even without the catalytic converter this ECE version, as it was known, would meet the emission requirements of the European community.

Carl if you were concerned or having any issues with roadworthy inspections in your State then Cats could be custom fitted but you would require two x high flow Cats off the shelf that any exhaust shop stocks for most V8 cars. One installed each side up front near where the exhaust bolts up to your Tri-Y's by cutting up your existing custom system and welding them in.

Thanks very much Kim

I've been watching you're posts on new systems with interest, the sel sounds spectacular. I don't think I'd have any issues with a new system here in Vic, we don't have annual checks so it's just the initial roadworthy check at purchase, but I'm looking at a move to NSW for work and would have to go through a new registration process and annual checks. I have heard of issues with others on the forum especially in relation to historic or club registration.
I have put in application with MB club here to get access to the EPC but will take a few weeks. I'd like to have some documentation to establish that it's a cat free car if there's any push back. I wouldn't mind putting in high flow cats if necessary but I'd prefer not to if I can avoid it.

Cheers

Cheers Carl and yes if moving to NSW they are tighter on inspections over there.
But yes if you had some official docs it would help on showing that is how the coupe was sold new into Europe/Asia who had tight emissions laws back then where this 300hp version was only sold into.
Yeah the SEL is a joy to drive now but the SEC sounds great too as had that same custom exhaust done at the same time (shorter rear muffler case) and yet to do a video clip on that one -but it sounds hot.

Here's what EPC says:
wdb1260452A545517.JPG
Option codes:
512U from 01.01.1988 to 31.12.1995 ALMANDINE RED METALLIC
266A LEATHER PINE GREEN

251 from 01.04.1980 to 30.11.1990 " BECKER RADIO MEXICO CASSETTE, FULL STEREO, ELECTRONIC"
524 from 01.01.1964 PAINTCOAT PRESERVATION
581 from 01.01.1977 AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL
613 from 01.02.1963 " LAMP UNIT, ASYMMETRICAL, L.H. TRAFFIC"
677 from 01.06.1965 to 30.11.1991 TROPICAL BATTERY
682 from 01.04.1970 FIRE EXTINGUISHER

From the options list site ( http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~mtor/mbcodedsc.html ), the codes for catalyst cars seem to be 620 or 821 - which yours doesn't have.

620 EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
620 from 01.09.1983 to 28.02.1985 E.C.E. VERSION WITH CATALYST TECHNIQUE
620 from 01.03.1985 VEHICLES WITH CATALYST TECHNIQUE
821 from 01.11.1984 to 30.09.1989 CATALYTIC CONVERTER RECONVERSION KIT (RUEF)

That's great. I wasn't sure if the emisson controls were listed as SA codes. I was aware of the code 822 for the earlier ECE cars but not how to differentiate between the later cat and non cat cars.
With mine being from Hong Kong, I assumed it was cat free but good to be able to confirm and learn some more along the way.

Much appreciated to all

Looking forward to the sec video. I was watching that wheeler dealer episode the other day on the widebody and thinking of you. Anything happening with your black beast? I've been so tied up, working out of town, that I haven't gotten round to doing anything to my 560. Well over 2 years since I was over in Perth to collect it. I have the aero 1's, 245/45/17's, H & R springs and the nakamichi system all ready to go in but have to get my act together. I'll have to decide what to do with those door pockets before I put the new speakers in, might go for a custom solution as I quite like the location but hopefully job change will give me the opportunity to get on with it
