kimrh's custom exhaust

Post by MercMad West Australian » Sat 05 Aug, 2017 6:21 pm

Saturday morning hooliganism

good sound system required, don't bother listening on tinny speakers in laptops / phones / phablets. Most accurate sound I achieved was from my bose qc35's i use for flying. Must have good bass response.

note, deserted rural 110 zone, no laws broken during the making of this video.

Great clip ..loved it ..had me thinking whole time please dont jump out now Mr Kangaroo

They did a nice job on hiding those twin tailpipes..just wondering if it makes it louder inside the car with them exiting where they do ?
And i think its also illegal i think it has to extend past the BB unless its a ute or similiar ?
A gd test to temporary clamp on a couple of pieces of scrap pipe that would extend past the BB and do a noise test ?
Be good to clean those welds up on the system..we used to use Pickling Paste on stainless pipe welds ...dont know if its still avail or what they use these days
Nice looking Vehicle with a beautiful note...oh and those wide rims

I don't like the tail pipes sticking out under the skirt - it always looked a bit tacky to me -especially those long ones that stuck out.
The AMG skirt does a good job of making the dumpers discrete.
The noise in the car is a low rumble and not loud at all (camera mic's inside cars always don't give a true sense of what its like live) reasonably sedate when cruising and no drone at all.
The sound as actually bliss as far as my ears are concerned

Hi Kim,
your AMG speedo shows a lot too much ... if 130 were only 110 acc. to MMWA :laughing6: :laughing6:

You should start in 1st gear up to 6,000; the sound should even be better

Hi Thomas - just saw pics of your custom exhaust and a nice result - jealous that you have the autobahn to play on for these sort of road tests.
and yes i was making sure i maintained max 110 (went briefly over that for a few seconds under acceleration but backed off very quickly)
Yes the starts were pretty lame but it was mainly about trying to capture the sound from the new system.

But like you i definitely noticed a difference in performance response from the engine since fitting the new system.
The engine feels more agile to the throttle movements and the driving experience is more crisp and perky

I just had my wheel alignment done on Wed by "Glide Automotive" who specialise in the Mercs (being doing these older models for +20 years and really know their stuff on the W126)
They have their own dialing in set-up for a W126 (which allows for the camber of our roads) after many years of testing.
He took my SEL for test spin and came back pretty impressed (and he has driven a lot of these over the years). Asked what i had done to the engine as said the car really moves and he reckoned the exhaust note was spot on when i asked for his feedback on the noise level.

I honestly believe these M117 engines really do suit a decent exhaust set-up versus the factory system and in particular the terrible factory crossover arrangement across the top of the bell-housing (Behind the engine block) as seen on a lot of Aussie delivered W126 V8's
Even if you were chasing a custom quiet system it can still be achieved when choosing muffler choices.

Hi Kim,
I'll report, once it stopped raining :laughing6: ... do you still have the cat in your car? Imho, the performance increase comes from the removal of the cat. Feels like a cork in the system has been removed.

Regards
Thomas

No Cat - but this 300hp euro model never had a cat from new as passed Euro emissions testing back then when it was released by MB onto the market (That spec engine was never offered/sold new into USA/Australia/NZ etc). My SEL was sold new to a UK buyer in 1989 and it was privately imported here in 1996.

Yep, that's right ... forgot. Those cars become increasingly interesting here, as they reach 30 years and therefore tax will be significantly lower. Sometimes you find those 300hp cars in Italy; not many were delivered in Germany (we're so conscious about the environment :laughing5: )
