W126 Seat base more padded than W123 ?

Post by tsharkey » Sun 25 Jun, 2017 6:46 pm

Hi - The drivers seat in Hans has the sags so I went off to a self service wreckers to pull a passenger seat base. The W123 I had my eye has been packed off to the crusher so I grabbed the W126 next door passanger base (84 380 SE). It fits and and is nice and firm but instead of foam padding, its uses a very thick looking hair arrangement. Do the W126 seat bases have more padding than their little brothers, or is this just my e class inferiority complex showing ?

If so, I´ll add that to the S class upgrades I include in any W123 project.

They do but then so do a W108 and W114 i think. I'm surprised 123 wouldn't be the same. Could it have been replaced with foam? Not sure if s class has thicker padding.

Series I W123 has hair matting but no were near as much as this seat. Series II onwards had the foam padding (when they moved to the sculptured back seats like in the W126, so was surprised to see hair stuff in this W126 base. Looks like it has a bit more in there than w123 so I suspect it is a "class above" .....

Rubberised glue horsehair / coconut fibre - depending on the age - I think the coconut fibres started some time in w108 production? There's a lot of conflicting evidence to support both are still being used - I am not sure.

"More" padding would be a sound reasoning - the reasoning would be 'it's an S-class' so the expectation would certainly be there... :laughing6:

Imagine back in the day - If you bought an S class and then someone told you the seats were identical to the ones in the compact / e class, then I'm betting you'd be a little miffed at shelling out extra for the same interior.....

Only a guess of course. so a 50% chance of being correct :laughing6:

even in the W126 seats of Gen1 versus Gen 2 and then later series Gen2 from late 88 -91 they improved even more.
The rubberised glued horse-hair creates the sculptured shape for the leather cover which has foam sewn into it- the base has slots cut into it to accept the various methods of pulling the leather into shape and locking into position to create the grooved shape in the leather pattern middle sections - originally wire rods embedded into the base and then upholstery hooks locking onto wire rods stitched into the leather cloth underneath. Then later moving onto wire hooks stitched into the leather cloth underneath and when they are pushed through the slits in the base they are locked in with small plastic pegs (the last method is the best) and that creates the nice sculptured look of the leather on the base and seat back.
Then when all that work is done - then the base with leather attached is ready to be mounted to the seat frame.

I improve my front W126 seat frames even more by adding extra foam blocks around the perimeter of the frame top & bottom rail which firms the seat even more from being too soft when getting in and out of the front when your arse is not centred in the middle.
I also add extra upholstery wadding (padding) into the sides of the leather (between the base & the leather) to bolster the seat sides a bit more for that more snug fit when your seated into the front seats.

It is amazing the difference when you spend the time on front seats when they are out of the car to really get them set up even better than from factory new.
It is not a hard task at all and places like "Spotlight" and Auto upholstery suppliers like "Daley's" are your friend
