Great Episode aired on TV re our W126 SEC

Post by kimrh » Mon 21 Nov, 2016 8:41 pm

Some of you may be aware that the UK based car show "Wheeler Dealers" aired on pay TV Discovery Channels - As part of their 2016 series they just aired a segment (filmed in USA) on buying a cheap Euro 1983 gen1 500SEC (grey import into USA) that was not running very well at all and needed work and picked it up cheap (as these guys do)

They then worked in with a BW forum member in USA who had been collecting and storing all the required parts to build a tribute AMG Widebody (same kit from the limited batch made in LA in 2010 from the phoenix wreck of which i also have one of those same kits)

Then the main focus of the show is going about transforming the coupe into the widebody and they covered off re-building the Gen 1 500 heads into AMG spec as in the parts stash was also a set of the 50:1 AMG cams, so they covered off on the head work done by the same machine shop that has being doing these mods for the US based members.

They then approached Magnaflow Mufflers to build a replica AMG set of headers (via 3D scanning/imaging of an original loaned set including the complete exhaust to the tips) and set about building a similar system but with their own magnaflow products and all mandrel bent pipework etc.

The coupe was re-built with the usual top end new parts like injectors and rubber components/suspension/brakes/paint/recaro seats/wood trim etc (no mention of Trans or diff in the segment) but i suppose they have to condense so much into the time-slot they only cover off on the main ticket items.

The end result was really nice and it sounds awesome as they took it to a track to film the final result being unveiled
Naturally our BW member Bob who supplied all the parts ends up being the buyer
The segment covered off an the Pre-merger AMG period and explains all about it very well and how rare these pre-merger cars and parts are now.

If you can't access the show shoot me a PM to discuss offline
Cheers

Hi Kim

Ive just had a look on our Foxtel IQ and its not listed. From a quick search of the WD website it appears to be Series 13,episode 11 which doesn't have a listing on Foxtel yet (the furtherest my IQ will go to 13,09 on 5 December.)

Will be interested to watch it when it comes up.

Regards

Some pics of the exhaust built by Magnaflow in their shop using their own products so it was in kit form for ease of assembly as a bolt on using clamps as joiners.
Best sounding M117 i have ever heard (except for a 32V coupe)

Magnaflow were approached direct by local US W126 Owners asking for the headers to be made available for public to buy off them as a custom order but they declined to make any more sets. Said this was just a one-off project for the TV show and that was it.
Pity as the specs were scanned into their 3-D CAD system and saved so it would have been easy for them to produce more sets in LHD, but a little more effort if they were to mirror image for RHD.

The best option is to find a set of MB Tri-Y's in RHD or the MB Euro Logs that are also twin dumpers.
Otherwise you ave to approach an exhaust shop to have them custom made.
I know "Pacemaker" over in Sydney way have made them because i have seen them on a 560SEC (see pics below)
So try them to see if the they saved the profile on their system
