Big Brother SEL560 joins the family - pics

Post by kimrh » Mon 25 Jan, 2016 1:15 pm

Purchased this mighty SEL off another WA member Tim who is well entrenched in the W116 6.9 world with two of them in his collection.
Tim had moved into his new home and was severely lacking parking car space so something had to give and we stuck a deal as it needed some attention which i have since addressed.
So what we actually have here is a rare spec fully loaded 1989 Euro imported privately from the UK in 1996

1989 560SEL
Colour 904 (midnight blue - in English)
Interior - Creme/beige
M117-968 300hp (220kw) full spec engine
722-350 Trans
2.65LSD Diff
Full Hydro suspension -Gen2 updated electronic controlled version with active suspension for cornering and high speed driving - 2 settings - standard or firm and auto lowering and auto firm at high speed above 120kmh
Later Gen2 version heated front and rear seats (more luxurious and comfortable)
Orpho seats with lumber adjustment and firmness adjustment
Rear Parcel Shelf Blind
Electric adjustment rear seats
Dual Zone aircon

So since it was rescued from a rural property in the outskirts of Perth some 4yrs ago after being parked up for 10yrs Tim has put a lot of time and effort into it -
Heads rebuilt and a complete top end rebuild with new genuine MB only parts including all rubber parts.
New engine mounts/trans mount/new radiator
Hydro struts pulled and serviced
Hydro valves/lines serviced
New hydrogen cells ( 5 in total)
Complete overhaul of steering components and wheel alignment
New bearings/brake rotors etc
Fuel tank removed and all new rubber fuel lines/hard lines flushed /new pumps/filters/sock etc
FD overhauled

I have been working my arse off recently to cut and repair some rust in the lower rear wheel arches and lower window corners
I have re-painted both sides of the car and now only have the bonnet and trunk lid to finish off
I have restored the interior and its come up like brand new
Fitted AMG/OZ Racing 3 piece forged rims 8.5" front / 10" rear
Nakamichi NA350IBTR head unit to go in plus Nak speakers
Front slider burlwood storage box going in shortly once i have dyed it correct colour
SEC front bumper with fog lights to swap in
Mint W124 Burlwood combo airbag steering wheel to swap in

Aiming to AMG bodykit kit this with a Gen2 set up and paint all one colour midnight blue
Sort out the twin exhaust by removing the kidney's to get some low rumble happening.

The SEL drives absolutely superb right now and has a ton of torque and is actually very quick and fun to drive but ever so smooth - however put your foot down and she shoves you back into the seat and pulls hard to 6,000rpm. I am actually quite chuffed at how quick the SEL is for its size and kickdown mode is ferocious

Some pics also along side the white SEC coupe makes an interesting comparison

That looks absolutely stunning, particularly with the 3 piece rims. The Merc560 plates would look good on it too.

I had a Aussie 1990 560SEL about 20 years ago, it was fantastic car, and so fast point to point. I had businesses in the New England and down on the Central Coast of NSW at the time and drove it from Armidale to Gloucester over the Barrington tops in 1 hour and 40 minutes almost every week. This was a distance of 210klms. I replaced the car with a 911 Porsche which was no faster on the same run.

Yeah i have a new compressor/RD/condenser etc to go in after the system has been flushed/cleaned/evacuated and then hychill goes in.
The coolant installed by Tim is correct Zerez GO5 stuff but it comes in green as well as yellow now.

That is a great story Sirgeo and what a blast to be able to drive one of these 20yrs yrs ago on a weekly basis and stretch her legs on a +200km run - that would have been fun.
Imagine if it had been this version with the full active hydro system (no springs) it auto firms the hydro struts and lowers the car when up around 120kph or can manually set firm ride. Open highway driving through some long stretches and twisty bits would have been pretty impressive back then with the high output 300hp Euro motor in particular versus the Aussie version.
I am very impressed with the Orpho seats, you can feel it in your lower back as you play with the controls to set where you want extra support.
Did you keep any photo's from back then? Would love to see some posted up if you have any.

Nice ride Kim, can you post a pic of the new 124 wheel once it's installed, I've been thinking about installing a smaller diameter airbag tiller on my 300Sel, wondering if it blocks the dials at all in any way?

Cheers

Fitted my swapped in 15" Burlwood steering wheel and airbags plug and play as with the steering wheel.
This one has a thicker hand grip and feels real nice plus keeping the factory look for the SEL from a later model with same contact horn rings set-up as the W126
Also fitted the front burlwood slider storage box which gives the finishing touch to the interior
Right under dash cover is off as i am cleaning that before i re-fit.
Feels nicer the drive now with the slightly smaller steering wheel
Just need to fit the new Nach head unit and speakers and new matts

I like that wheel Kim. Is it easy to swap them over or is there rooting around required. Straight swaps I can do with instructions but rooting about & tweaking usually sees me breaking some bracket or clip or some obscure hard to get part that costs me more money & lots of swearing!

First of all you have to find one of those pretty rare W140 Burlwood combo s/wheels with the matching rear multi track brass ring set up to the W126 wheel. (that is your biggest challenge and expect to pay top dollar for a good one)

Once you have one it is an easy swap except you need a set of long reach T/torque sets (look like Allen Keys but different head) to undo the W126 airbag from the rear and bolt in the W140 airbag from the rear (2 bolts hold the airbag in place identical set-up on both wheels except the W126 is 5mm and W140 is 3mm if i recall)
Both airbags have identical connector fitting into the rear of the airbag so its plug and play but your must disconnect the battery first before touching anything.

Of course you need a 10mm allen Key with a socket head and extension bar to undo the steering wheel bolt making sure the steering wheel is dead centre before the old wheel comes off, so the new wheel is centred going on (most important the steering wheel lock is off so you don't strain that and bust it as they are on tight from factory - grunty rattle gun is handy)
Pretty well much plug and play with no mods required at all

Just drove the SEL at dusk tonight for a quick run down the beach past Hillary's Marina which is close to me (can't help myself as always itching to get in and go for a drive and will find any excuse and the balmy warm sunsets are great with the sunroof open and windows down watching the sun set over the ocean) The wheel is 15" and feels great - heaps better than the W126 wheel and looks so much better and still retains the factory look.

Ok I'm green with envy on SEL. But not the rust , and I know how hard that can be. But really Kim in your hands a very worthwhile resto on what must be a unique car any where in the right hand drive world. Nice set up on the plug leads in the red. What brand did you use?

HI Guys

The part Kims referring to for the Airbag steering wheel is called a 'clock-spring' - Ive got a spare one from a late model 126 if anyone is chasing one.

The leads are sourced inside Japan. The leads came off a Japan LHD national version which was sacrificed for a perfect parcel shelf (metal part) and mint cylinder heads. These were the ones that were refurbished and and installed on the blue ECE 560.

The original ones were too flogged out to save, the exhaust valve guides were bouncing along with the valves and oil was pouring out the exhaust ports when tim first got the car. It was in a pretty sad state to start with, Tim spent a few years bringing it up to a reasonable standard then Kim came along, took it and put us all to shame and got the car to the state its in now over the course of i think 1 month. His enthusiasm is second to none and certainly warrants some kind of trophy. :rr:

I wish i could say the same about my widebody 560SEC project -
a couple of years has passed by now and hopefully i can get that sorted as this years goal now that my ankle is on the mend and the shed build is behind me now. Although i still have a heap of other reno work to finish off around the house.
Perhaps both Craig and myself can push each other a bit more for both WB projects to get done and dusted.

Further work has progressed on the SEL. In the middle of fitting a complete genuine AMG Gen2 SEL body kit made of the same flexible plastic product as the original MB bumpers & skirts.
Rear is done including fitment of a rare AMG larger rear spoiler for the boot lid.
Front one piece bumper i have now finished prep and paint and just searching for a mint MB gen 2 centre chrome piece (let me know if you have one to sell) as the piece on my SEL has small leading edge dent from a stone flicked up.
I have a good spare but it must be a Gen1 as it has the headlight wiper jet nozzles mounted in the chrome piece. Anyone familiar with what model SEL/SE had that set up?
Happy to swap if you are chasing that nozzle set-up.

Next task is to remove all the side trim panels and paint and swap the lower side skirts over
Leaving the chrome and alloy trim untouched at this stage as undecided on painting it matching paint colour as AMG did.
Will wait and see how it turns out and make a call down the track.

The high comp 220kw 560 comes with an external engine oil cooler behind the bumper RHS and when i was trial fitting the AMG bumper today i noticed the bumper driving light recess interfered with the cooler, so i had to relocate the cooler further back and that was a fiddly job as the cooler is mounted on factory brackets.

Rebuilt the hydro pump today with all new O-rings and shaft seal as it had a slight weep, but it appears fixed now so happy about that.

Fitted the chrome i had from the old bumper to the new bumper and after sorting out the oil cooler interference issue, got it all buttoned down and adjusted correctly so it is sitting nice a tight against the panels.
Just need to re-install the driving lights and wire them up with their own relay.
All in all a good days work despite the lousy cold weather with it raining most of the day and it got dark pretty quick as i was finishing up for the day
Quick snap of progress it looks a lot different and more aggressive with the colour coded AMG bumper

Yes it is definitely transforming the look of the SEL.
Purists would not like it, but i like the more aggressive stance and the lines flow nicely as if it was factory issue.
The Lads at AMG were pretty switched on with their design skills considering it was some +25yrs ago and it just amazes me how far ahead of the pack they were back then

Sides are done- just haven't swapped out the factory side skirts yet just out of curiosity to see how they look all painted up.
Slowly getting there

Couple pics after giving it a run last Sunday morning - still with the MB side-skirts now colour coded which actually don't look out of place. Will swap them out later.
I definitely now like the mono-colour look in all midnight blue now that it has been completed -glad i kept the chrome trim as it breaks it up and i don't like painting over chrome/alloy trim

Finally found some time today to swap over the factory side skirts for the AMG ones and complete the body kit transformation.
I must admit the full kit does blend it all in very well and it actually looks pretty cool on the SEL.
A long way to go yet with the total transformation as minor detailing really turns out to be very many hours of work.
Brand New grille to go on / brand new headlight glass coming from UK/more panel-paintwork to complete/new sound system install/ new hydro lines to swap in -the list goes on - but all in good time.
Enjoyed cruising in it late today to give it a run and dropped down to the local park for a few snaps of the new side-skirts

Awesome Kim, beginning to think that is a better colour than black, twin axe handle exhaust dumps just visible below the rear skirt would look good, you have a good eye for such details.

Update - the polished centres/black rims screws are swapped out for silver centres/chrome rim screws and wider 2inch lips on the front/ 6.5" barrel but the rims remain 8.5" ET18 as the centres are rare custom spec offset by Oz racing for AMG to allow wider lips (same as the front rims on my white coupe)
installed an original Becker grand prix head unit today for the time being.

Last Sunday at the German Day Car Meet we were fortunate the club booked Perry Lakes reserve and we we allowed access onto decent grass and a nice reserve setting
Later in the arvo when most had departed we hung around as MercmadWA (acca David) was fascinated with that mint silver W140 private import from Japan and talked to the owner for ages.
I slipped over and used my iphone to take advantage of the perfect setting for getting some decent pics of my two W126's
They did actually came out ok - i posted up the SEC pics in its own thread and now posting up the 560SEL pics in its own thread here to keep the progress of this build project in one thread

I was quite surprised how well an iphone shoots even with no fancy tripod as the pros use with expensive digital camera's and the use of reflective boards etc - just me trying to stop the iphone from moving which us really hard to do versus holding an proper SLS camera.

To me at least this is the best of your stable. The long wheelbase, with plenty of room for the family and the contrasting interior/exterior colours really are perfection.

Yes David it has completely changed my opinion of the SEC versus SEL debate.
The SEL is a joy to drive and feels so smooth and solid on road it certainly reminds you they were such a luxury car for their time considering this one is approaching 30yrs of age in 2019
I hope more get saved instead of getting scrapped and they are certainly worthy of restoring in my opinion

I totally agree and not just because i have 2 of them and would like to sell one, but looking at the market nothing seems to sell at the moment. Of course you never know condition unless you have seen the car in front of you but there is a 77k km '86 560sel that has not had bids. Some cracks but possibly leatherique savable front seats, comes with uncracked dash but not fitted but describes some clear coat peel - hard to see from the few photos but I guess that could be a biggy to set straight. Not sure what the starting bid was last time, $5.8k this time and see if any takers. I know paint costs a lot though. The car i want to sell has a few minor issues but I don't know whether to be bothered if a car is not even worth $5k, so it is sitting with internal covers and outdoors waiting to see if the market moves at all. When you drive one of these to me it makes you feel like a million dollars!

Craig, this 560SEL was previously for sale in Adelaide on gumtree a year or so ago (for about $9K or $10K from memory). I contemplated having a look at it, but never did in the end. It seems to have moved to Victoria and popped up for sale again a few months later. Might indicate the buyer didn't quite get what he was expecting... (It's also on Carsales for $7K - has been drifting down gradually from about $12K.)

Thanks for that background. Yes 12k for something that potentially needs 10k for full respray is a bit rich. And of course there could be all sorts of other things wrong. The other $7k car asking price looks like an honest appraisal, although the tiny rust spot under rear screen is no doubt much worse once rear window out. Mine is really good there but things like A/C not working that used to work and sunroof with broken bits that cost a fortune - i should try harder to find these out of a wreck but often they are broken. Grey trim has a bit of fading across top of doors and minor cracks in the 'not as soft as it once was' soft leather trim, all has me wondering if it is worth the effort if cars don't change hands for a bit more than that. Anyway - hijacking the thread - but certainly not in the condition of Kim's and this car of course will always be that much more special with that suspension and the ultimate motor in it. Lucky this special one found its way through the right hands.

At least you get driving duties in it to the car meets - haha
And as you know this project (like all resto projects) has soaked up plenty of greenbacks and still more upgrades to do, but worth it when you know only two of these spec exist in Aust

As well as my white coupe I just had a custom exhaust built for my SEL from the Tri-Ys back in 2.25inch S/Steel using a Magnaflow performance S/steel twin-in-twin out 11inch centre muffler and in the rear a Magnaflow performance S/Steel 17inch twin-in-twin out 2.5inch with internal crossover and discretely hidden twin dumpers. (i used a 14inch length rear on the coupe)
This is a replication of the Wheelers & Dealers TV Discovery Channel segment on the Replica AMG Widebody build over in USA who gave the task of building a custom exhaust along the lines of the AMG exhaust system that was supplied for Magnaflow to replicate but using their own product. Which many of you may have watched by now.

Boy oh boy the sound is just insanely incredible on the white 5litre coupe - but i thought i would tame it down just a tad on the SEL by using a 17inch length in the rear muffler (also has an internal crossover like the 14inch rear one)
Bloody hell with the bit extra length in the pipes due to the length on the SEL body & 3inch more length in the rear muffle this sounds even more deep rumble than the coupe but just a tad quieter - but its f***n awesome!!!! and perfect for cruising in an SEL which has more class than an SEC.
I am in heaven now driving this SEL.
I did not know how damn good you could these M117 engines to sound with the correct set-up.
Just like on the TV show it is a deep visceral rumble at idle and when you take off it is better than a Gen3 and cruising it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck.
It reminds me of the Aussie 5 litre V8 sound with a good system.
Magnaflow put a bit of effort into getting it right as the TV show goes out Global and they sure got it right on this as a great plug for themselves - good on them.

My exhaust guy could not believe the amount of weight shredded by dropping the factory system- as he states its bloody heavy like a boat anchor.
When i get a chance i will post it up on a youtube vid of both the SEC and SEL

I finally a managed to do a short video on the new custom stainless steel exhaust system i had fitted from the Tri-Y's back using two Magnaflow S/Steel mufflers (centre and rear) with a crossover in the rear 17inch muffler and finished off with twin dumpers that are discretely semi hidden under the rear AMG bumper skirt.

I am extremely pleased how the sound turned out with its deep rumble and no drone and no raspy barking at all and it really sounds awesome at idle and when driving as the revs climb and when you back off and when cruising steady it goes pretty quiet, but as soon as you are back on the peddle it lets you know especially when it kicks down a gear. In fact it sounds good no matter what you are doing!!!

Anyway check it out below in the small vid i put together using a gero3 GoPro mounted to the inside rear side window and with all the windows up otherwise the wind noise is terrible with the crap internal camera mic.

I bought a decent external Rode miniature mic but the USB to 3.5mm jack adaptor cable i purchased did not work unfortunately and i will have to buy a proper GoPro brand adapter cable before i can mount the mic at the rear of the car with the 6m extension cable i also purchased to do this.
Once i have that sorted i will do another decent video.
This Vid was just a trial run and the sound came out nowhere near as good as it sounds live.

Play the Vid on a decent sound system with volume turned up!!!
Then perhaps add some feedback comments in the youtube vid on what you reckon. "bearing in mind i was disappointed i could not get the decent external mic i purchased to work"

The car feels a lot more edgy and responsive as well as loosing a lot of weight from removing the factory system underneath.
I think the custom exhaust has made a noticeable difference with definitely no loss of low down torque at all.

Picked up MercMad WA (David) this morning (Sat) in the SEL and we headed out of Perth to private road for some proper filming of the new exhaust system
David was operating his pro video camera in various scenarios to really mix it up.
Lot of editing to be done by David but we should have captured good footage of the sound the new exhaust is producing to really demonstrate how good this Magnaflow system partners up with the M117 engine as a good reference for others wanting to go down this path.
Stay tuned:

We do have cars & coffee cruises usually every 2 mths with the last one being in June
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=23931
We have a break for the winter months as most don't like coming out on a wet day, so next will most likely be in late Sept and it will be posted in here beforehand on here.
