Rear Shock Ball Joints?

Post by Fozza » Tue 11 Jun, 2019 10:32 pm

Does anyone know what a 'rear shock ball joint' is? Can anyone educate me... my basic mechanical understanding doesn't extend this far. My mechanic tells me mine have collapsed on my 1989 W126 300SEL, and doesn't know where to source them. The result of the collapsed rear shock ball joint is that there is a nasty 'thud' that comes from the rear whenever she goes over even minor bumps/holes in the road.
Any knowledge / thoughts on where to source would be much appreciated...thanks in advance...

The shock (its actually a hydraulic strut in the self levelling but looks like a shock) - has a ball joint that screws into the base of it. I understand this was once available as a part but no longer available. I don't know if still available but online - ebay maybe - there was a place in eastern states that had the whole struts for something like 700 a pair. My cars are ok but I have hoarded a few pairs of complete struts off wrecks that have good ball joints on them. So if you can't track something down new and no other suggestions on here, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a set of good used ones. I think the struts are the same on all 126 and also 123 - I think they have a 123 part number stamped on them.

But see what others come up with.

The source is 2nd hand only- but I'll ask how many he has and certainly post details if he's got more.
Will continue looking for new ones - with appropriate and realistic exceptions of disappointment!

If the used ones feel pretty tight and the rubber boot on it is good, every chance its going to last for ages.

Any chance of a pic of one of these Ball joints if anyone has one unscrewed from the strut or a part number

Not being a steering joint would a interior joint clean of the ball and a injection of liquid urethane or similiar restore them a tad..?

2007 Mr Green said they stopped selling the ball joint as a seperate part..

I've just got a couple of 'struts' with ball joints from my long time mechanic in Byron Bay. Pretty sure he has more. He's just now closing down his business but has kept a load of useful 2nd hand stuff pre 1990 Mercs. If anyone needs a W126 ball joint PM me and I'll ask him. He's not an OzBenz member and is largely uncontactable.
Merc-304...Will take a pic and upload over the weekend (may or may not be unscrewed!) or look for the part #
