High Compression 560s in Australia

So I'm trying to get an idea of the numbers of M117.968s in Australia and this is what I currently know:

10 in total.

1 x WA,
1 x NSW,
1 x SA,
1 x TAS,
1 x QLD (wrecked),
5 x VIC (incl 1 wrecked LHD).

Further detail:

WA: Update, navy ext, beige int, seat heaters, orth frt seats, rear blind, full hydro,

NSW: Black ext, split rear seats, rear blind, full hydro removed,

SA: Unknown apart from the fact it exists,

TAS: Update, split rear seats, advertised a while ago,

QLD: Grey int, wrecked to be a donor for something else,

VIC: Update, silver ext, grey int, split rear seats, frt seat heaters with orth, full hydro,

VIC: Champagne ext, burgundy int, rear SLS removed,

VIC: Update, black ext, black int, seat heaters, rear SLS removed, LPG,

VIC: Update, black ext, nil sunroof, no SLS,

VIC: White ext, navy int, seat heaters, orth frt seats, LHD, wrecked.


Anyone able to add to the list???

What about the HC 500SELs; another thread?

Isn't there a very ordinary, clapped out example for sale at the moment for 3 or 4 times what its worth by a seller saying its the only one in the country? Oh, I see what you're doing... ;)

I have the remains of one. I had assumed he was talking about SEL's with the full air or is it hydro suspension set up like Kim's? First hand i have only ever seen one very early 500SEL with the full suspension, once owned by Davide Frada - must ask him where it went. I don't know why people make comments like only one in the country - instantly I think 'unlikely' and is usually easily checked out and then you are just faced with the thought about all the other things the seller is lying about. I prefer comments like 'rare - its the only one on my street!'.

Assume you are talking M117-968 10:1 560 300HP engines in which case i have 4
My 1988 Black 560SEC is 300hp version + my AMG ported EFI engine + a spare
Dean's 560SEC / Perry's AMG SEL with a Euro 560
That makes 6 in WA plus the one Mercmad is talking about then if true that makes 7 in WA

The "best" sales argument is always "I have a 420SL for sale, the least produced SL" ... so very rare bla bla bla. Figure-wise it's correct, but nobody wanted it back then.

typo i meant M117
All 10:1comp that found their way into Aust should have come with Tri-Ys standard.

The high comp Gen2 500 engines (also with Tri-Ys standard) found in the SEC/SEL (not sure if any came in the SE) are also pretty rare to find in Aust as majority that came in as imports were Gen1 engines

My car is a 500 SEL AMG with a coupe nose put on by AMG, currently has a 117 963 560 engine. you can see more pics and info on page 10 of Star Shots

There is also a 560 SEC LHD with Vic plates in Kal, so possibly another one, will see what I can find out.

You are probably right Kim, because the code I quoted was from the original 5lt engine and the the engine that is in it now is a 117 968.

These are not that rare. We installed one in a 560GE.

We also have at least 4 customers with them, none of which I think are on your list. Also 117 968 just describes that you have a M117 engine in 5.6lt configuration. It is only the full engine number in combination with the original chassis VIN number that determines if it is an HV engine or not. Give or take a few engines the break where the compression changed was at 037642, so long as the engine wasn't fitted to an Australian or US spec VIN. The 117 965 engine change was around 016683.

Agree to verify you have the 300hp 10:1 comp version - engine number ends with HV or .10 and check the end of the cams with a mirror for 16 / 17 for ECE or 24 / 25 for later RUF (meaning left & right cam coding).
Fuel head should also end in 015 or 016 (on both the high comp 965 engine as well)
