They said you'd never make it ever make it evermakeitevermakeitevermakeit

Post by AMG » Thu 24 Aug, 2017 8:32 am

Whoa.
We're almost there. Just a few more extension modules and we're done.

Firstly, Apologies for the extended downtime. It really pissed me off. I hope you're not as mad as I was at 3pm yesterday.

We went into a "mandatory update" believing everything was going to be a simple straightforward routine event, as it has been for the last 8 or so years on the 'stable' version.
However, the has been a significant hiccup in the attempt to move off a platform which has EOS (end of support) as of Jan2017.

We planned for the straightforward update. Correct backups etc. (multiples of) but what we didn't bank on was an unnotified host change which effectivley killed us off in the middle of an update to the backend services which run the forum.

So first we lost a metric faeces-ton of files during an update, then the import of the db failed... repeatedly. on every subsequent backup of the database that we had. 8 times.

so after 4 days of manual table editing and scripting and doing things I swore years ago that I would never ever touch again - .... well. at least we're here.

Sorry for the disruption. Generally the host is quite apologetic (they summize they have lost an account over this - and they probably have) but I can also see that there are helpful people in there who are let down by others....

It's difficult to soar with eagles...... when you work with turkeys.

⅔ of the delay was wasted time waiting for responses to support tickets. unfortunately the issue was further compounded by the host placing a new unreasonably low filesize limit on sql file imports, forcing them to be split, uploaded in sequence and each one ran on a 2 hour interval. and that is what pissed me off, after finding repetitive corrupt files.

so that's the long and the short of it. Don't trust your host to be helpful, always expect that your data will be corrupted when you are too far into it to be able to easily rollback, and lastly drink lots of water.
We will be re-addressing this in a couple of weeks, but it will be a parallel migration after I told the host in no uncertain terms they had to provide a separate dedicated service for the migration after what happened.

Thanks to Aldo for the new forum logo. We have several - expect to see them in the future update.

BIG Thanks for all your efforts on our behalf AMG!
FYI functionality in Tapatalk is still screwy......

Also, I gather DROPBOX is killing Public Folder links on September 1st, and replacing them with Shared Links, so those of us who relied on that "service" for pictures and diagrams inserted in this Forum will have to edit our posts or lose the links ...

Congrats on getting things back up and running! Thanks for all the hard work. I've been there and I know it's not fun at all. Usually, it's one step forward, two steps back. All the while, the (mostly clueless) bosses are slowing everything down by asking silly questions and wanting constant updates. Wow, this is not bringing back good memories. (Many long, all-nighters with thousands of customers and big $$$ on the line. UGH!)
Some of us can appreciate what a monumental effort it takes to make things run smoothly.

Anyway, Thanks again! :occasion5:

Just reloading avatars and smileys.
some may not work or appear to be missing, due to the hashed filename not being available when we merged db entries. for those people it may be a case of reloading. Seems mine is lost in translation too.
