New Perth user 1981 500Ce

Post by bossphillips » Tue 22 Nov, 2016 8:39 pm

Hi guys,

New to the site just picked up a 1981 500Ce recently! My first merc and loving it.

ODO stopped at 160k but I think its done just over 200k. Its in really good nick it seems.

Only thing i have noticed is needs new pads I think as brakes squeak and new globe for dash. Aircon regas and some Tlc.

Might need to chew your ears off in the future as I don't know much about mercedes.

IF anyone can suggest where to get the pads in perth I would appreciate that as a start.

Cheers,

MITCH

Welcome. That's not a standard model designation so is it a W123 with a 500 engine fitted? Has been done and makes a very interesting car. If not sure what i mean, what does your chassis number start with? 123, 126 etc.

If it is a 500 and its new to you and especially if not sure about odometer, is there any evidence there for timing chain guides and tensioner replacement? So many of these engines destroy themselves when this small job is not done. Every 100000 km is the guide but if no actual receipt or evidence, just do it.

With the dash are all the lights not working? Unlikely all globes would go at once and more likely it is the rheostat. Sometimes just rotating it back and forth may solve the problem.

Brake squeal can be a couple of things, might just need a good run and can squeal just from vibration of from back of pad and high temp grease or special compounds can solve that. Worth checking disc thickness too and none of these parts are very expensive if you need to replace.

A/c can get complicated if it is climate control, with a bit of luck you have the 2 big knobs of the manual system. Once 5 posts done you can post up some photos.

Hi Mitch, it would be worth doing some research to identify if in fact the sedan which came with a straight 6 engine has had an engine conversion to a 5litre V8 and was the conversion registered etc.
Those coupes are real cool so would be great to see some pics posted up when you have enough posts to allow you.
Plenty of support on here or with us local guys in Perth

Brake pads are easy to source from the forum sponsors (MB Spares in Canberra who overnight courier it or local via Repco or OEM via Lintrex in Welshpool or Osborne Park)

It will make things easier once we know more details about the coupe including its VIN # and plenty of pics
Cheers Kim

VIN is 12603622012335

I meant to say 500Se, that's what the guy that sold it said. Its definitely an 8 and has no sign of an engine change nor the paperwork.

Will post pics when I can.

Certainly a rarer car (in australia at least) than the longer wheel base 500sel. Tell us a bit more about your car and/or yourself and soon will get to five.

I wish the car came with a manual or at least some more paperwork as its very hard to find information! It is one of the models with the headlight wiper blades. So far is doing me well though has a leak somewhere as it has quite a lot of water in the boot I think. Repco has brakes for a 500SEL but im not sure they are the same?

Sorry, having internet issues and approved the double post thinking it just didn't work the first time.

Brakes should be the same. The only difference i have found is that sometimes they can be girling or ATE calipers. Should be able to tell from stampings on the caliper. I think pads are the same, even seals i think, but just the dust caps from memory difference between the brands.

Water though can just be something like a tail light seal but hopefully it is not the common rust under rear window. Open the boot and feel around under where the window is and there are big round holes in the steel pressing. If you can feel rust then the only way to fix is to pull out the rear window and weld in new panels - not impossible but a difficult exercise. Hope it is something else.
